I worked at Jobcentre Plus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Dealing face to face with jobseekers makes an interesting job, dealing with people from all walks of life

    Cons

lots of administration, both computer systems and on paper, client interviews are timed, frustrating when client needs more help, very performance/targetdriven enviroment which can be very stressful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

allow more time for client interviews, get a more streamlined computer system, too many different programmes had to be used to maintain and update client records

I have been working at Jobcentre Plus full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Local. Great colleagues. Holidays are reasonable.

    Cons

Unrealistic targets and poor salary. Stress levels on lower level "band b" staff are high and getting worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the targets of call handling times. There are over 30 contact centres and as long as the targets are in place the centres will compete on call times and handover targets - this is to the detriment of a very vulnerable customer base. A contact centre manager is well known to have admitted he tells his staff once they have hit their handover target for the day cut the customers off if a handover is required.

I worked at Jobcentre Plus full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good setup for employees, reasonable effort for continuous training. I thought the management was generally good.

    Cons

Most people seem to hate working there. The longer you work there the more you feel you dislike the customers. You feel yourself thinking less idealistically and more heartlessly. And with all the changes while I was there I felt powerless to change anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the services accessible on-line (i.e. create something) and behave like a modern organisation instead of a dinosaur.

It provided a good education of the front-line of the welfare state and is a stable 9-5 job with a good benefits package

    I worked at Jobcentre Plus

    Pros

All the hours you work are monitored via a time-sheet (trusted to fill in yourself) and anything above contracted hours is given back in holidays.
Friendly, lively atmosphere where you can interact with lots of people.
Gives you access to Civil service clubs and societies which take many forms so there is somethig for everyone
Generous Civil service pension (but for how much longer I don't know!)

    Cons

The role is micro-managed so sometimes the best course of action may not be possible as targets have to be met (!) which can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people on the front-line as they deal with the impact of new policies every day. Focus on perfomance-managing the dead wood out.

I have been working at Jobcentre Plus

    Pros

Only 37 hours + flexi scheme incl 25/30 days off regularly which means an average total of ca 50 workind days off per year.
    Gold plated pension scheme.
Salaries far above what you would get in the private sector for similar leveles of qualifications (often zero) and actual skills (often extremely poor).

    Cons

HR done on the cheap for band As to band Cs - your team leader is to see and to do everything.
Little respect of confidentiality concerning any grdae lower than band D.
Old command style management still very widespread.
From Band D/E onlwards hardly any serious work anymore, a 9 to 5 work mentality is widespread also with management.
    No real Customer Service mentality.
Despite guidlines effectively many ways that mangement can hinder suitable candidates to progress with internal applications (they give points from -3 t o+3 which can be totally subjective and which usually tip off the balance of whether an intenal job applicant is sifted in or out for interviews.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start working (effectively and professionally) for your tax payers' financed lavish salaries (for only 36/37 hours of work per week...) and learn that command style management is outdated.

    Pros

The only good thing about working for them is helping the public in time of need

    Cons

Understaffed/Overworked, Under paid, Management have no idea what they are doing, Big bonuses g to MGT who do nothing the rest of the workforce get peanuts, contry to public belief the Civil Service is not al silver lined it used to be but things have drastically changed for the worse

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need managers & politicians who know how to run the place, stop giving out stupid vouchers & gifts that none of us want and give us a proper payrise
