I worked at John Deere full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good career opportunities, plenty of opportunity if you really want to work hard. Most of the people are dedicated and care about what they do. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Big company can seem overwhelming to someone who came from a small office. Lots of bureaucratic things to deal with, can be high pressure at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to look out for the average worker and look to upgrade some of the office areas.

I have been working at John Deere as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Stable, brand name, reasonable pay

    Cons

A company where ageism is an unspoken policy
Gray hair means you will most likely be working an off shift
Organization is hopelessly over staffed in the salaried ranks people literally sit and do nothing for hours a day
Only hiring 25 to 35 year olds in full time positions
Look at the positive reviews, they're all interns, co-ops or new employees who know nothing
They treat long time employees with distain and relegate them to off shifts to try to force early retirement
Management is not enforcing policies and the UAW basically runs the operations.
Contract employees are hired as "warm bodies" to staff the off shift positions that none of the young know nothing employees want

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pray your company never has any real competition, for if it ever does you're doomed

I have been working at John Deere

    Pros

This employer has great benefits and many options for how to save for retirement. The salary is great and there is focus on valuing the employee.

    Cons

There seems to be a lack of communication between departments. There is a great difference between the treatment of salary workers and wage workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure to always praise a great job and take an active interest in the employee's wants and needs. Also work to make sure there is a difference between work and personal life.

I have been working at John Deere

    Pros

The experience and knowledge I have attained

    Cons

They contract workers and then let them go after 3 years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The knowledge of the contracted employee after 3 years is not something that can be gained again by hiring a new contracted or other deere employees. This knowledge is wasted because they have to retrain the new employee and it takes three years to build this knowledge back up again

I have been working at John Deere

    Pros

Great place to work. Great workers, friends, and managers to work for.

    Cons

They use to many contingents from Volt Services. Volt takes to much money from their employees. Putting more money in their pocket while asking their employees to do the jobs of higher paid Deere employees at a hugely reduced salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek out what kind of money Volt is paying their workers. You are paying for a service and paying well only to have Volt take that money from the hands of those doing the work.

I have been working at John Deere

    Pros

You feel you are a part of a success story, especially in times like these... all the auto manufacturing companies falling flat, the real estate market in the toilet and so forth. John Deere encourages in-going education, they are open to change. We keep updated with meetings, seminars etc. They are very respectful and appreciate dedication on the part of employees. We are starting a 30% expansion, so we must be doing something right....

    Cons

Occasionaly, you run into some members of Sr. Management who are slow to act on important issues, they seem to need to hear the same information from several other sources before they take it seriously. We've had several of these folks retire, so things are improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an open mind, especially when it comes to work place suggestions.
