I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

All around great people to work with Healthy mix of people with and without Ag backgrounds but everyone is passionate about what they do I worked in R&D and it was great to have a company supportive of pursuing patents and recognize employees for their IP Training is great both inside and external Its nice to make a difference in something as important as trying to help feed the world

    Cons

There are two ladders for advancement (like many companies) management and technology. Deere has not figured out how to reward those on a technology career path. It can be near impossible to advance on the technology ladder. Which is sad because agriculture only continues to grow with respect to technology, and a lot of incredibly talented technology people find themselves banging their heads on technology ceiling, only to stay there for long periods of time, or switch to the management ladder, or leave the company.

    Advice to Management

Fix the technology ladder before all the people you've heavily invested in over the last decade leave for greener pastures.

I have been working at John Deere as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Stable, brand name, reasonable pay

    Cons

A company where ageism is an unspoken policy Gray hair means you will most likely be working an off shift Organization is hopelessly over staffed in the salaried ranks people literally sit and do nothing for hours a day Only hiring 25 to 35 year olds in full time positions Look at the positive reviews, they're all interns, co-ops or new employees who know nothing They treat long time employees with distain and relegate them to off shifts to try to force early retirement Management is not enforcing policies and the UAW basically runs the operations. Contract employees are hired as "warm bodies" to staff the off shift positions that none of the young know nothing employees want

    Advice to Management

Pray your company never has any real competition, for if it ever does you're doomed

I worked at John Deere full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good career opportunities, plenty of opportunity if you really want to work hard. Most of the people are dedicated and care about what they do. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Big company can seem overwhelming to someone who came from a small office. Lots of bureaucratic things to deal with, can be high pressure at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue to look out for the average worker and look to upgrade some of the office areas.

    Pros

This employer has great benefits and many options for how to save for retirement. The salary is great and there is focus on valuing the employee.

    Cons

There seems to be a lack of communication between departments. There is a great difference between the treatment of salary workers and wage workers.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to always praise a great job and take an active interest in the employee's wants and needs. Also work to make sure there is a difference between work and personal life.

    Pros

The experience and knowledge I have attained

    Cons

They contract workers and then let them go after 3 years

    Advice to Management

The knowledge of the contracted employee after 3 years is not something that can be gained again by hiring a new contracted or other deere employees. This knowledge is wasted because they have to retrain the new employee and it takes three years to build this knowledge back up again

    Pros

Great place to work. Great workers, friends, and managers to work for.

    Cons

They use to many contingents from Volt Services. Volt takes to much money from their employees. Putting more money in their pocket while asking their employees to do the jobs of higher paid Deere employees at a hugely reduced salary.

    Advice to Management

Seek out what kind of money Volt is paying their workers. You are paying for a service and paying well only to have Volt take that money from the hands of those doing the work.
