When I worked there running a division about 10 years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed running the Specialty Battery Division.

I worked at Johnson Controls as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Good solid company product-wise and established in Wisconsin

    Cons

They Micro-Manage employees to death... I was on the Business Application Support Team and the manager told us we will start getting Reviews WEEKLY to go over our phone stats, listen to 3 calls to advise on improvement, and how to improve for the next Review meeting in a WEEK! Who gets reviewed every week on ANY job?? I quit this position, was the first one I've ever quit in my life of 20 Years of I.T. work!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I.T. professionals are adults, have experience, should not be handled as Newbies like this. It adds stress and un-needed negativity. WEEKLY Reviews? Really??

    GWS Losing Customer Focus

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Excellent, dedicated people working at the customer accounts. Decent pay and benefits for the industry. Front line people care.

    Cons

GWS is a service business being run like a manufacturing business. The latest reorganization shows the arrogance of this company. The philosophy seems to be the customer is only right if they agree with what Johnson Controls wants to do. The only good thing is, if history is a guide, they will reorganize again in a year or two. The HR people have become so disconnected that most don't even know the correct answers to basic benefits questions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people who work with the customers every day.

Former Employee - Senior Product Engineer  in  Holland, MI
Former Employee - Senior Product Engineer in Holland, MI

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people are great and will help work through any issues that come up. Day to day interactions are friendly and there is a great support community. There is a lot of movement in the organization so there is some opportunity for advancement, but you really have to work for it.

    Cons

The leadership is very strongly focused on financial metrics and operations focus. There is not much of a bottom up approach to getting things done the right way. It is a struggle to get focus on technology and the correct technical solutions to problems. There are directives pushed down and a constant drive to be more budget focused and cost effective and to stay on schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make this a better place to work for the people. They are motivated, but they need to be inspired to get the best out of them.

    Wonderful people, great teams.

Former Employee - Staff Engineer in Milwaukee, WI

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The best reason to work there is to have the opportunity to work with talented, motivated people. The teams were great to work with.

    Cons

It was challenging to stay on top of a quickly evolving industry with remote teams. I believe that JCI is more comfortable with on-site teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep hiring good people.
