Advice to Senior Management
please appreciate talent
Pros
Fantastic view of the city, great opportunity to learn the in's and out's of a huge and complex corporation and the skills needed to work cooperatively with a marketing team.
Cons
Very little room to expand influence beyond production work, very little opportunity to do portfolio-building work, very few changes to move beyond a contract employee.
Advice to Senior Management
I'd suggest the leadership strives to be honest with the contract designers about their role in the office and their value to the GSDO organization.
Pros
They have an excellent benefits package. Senior management also holds themselves to the Credo.
Cons
Although they encourage one on ones with senior management. It takes six months to get on certain individuals calendars.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to hold yourselves to the Credo
Pros
-employee development - reviews, training, constant critical feedback and 'stretch' opportunities help employees realize their potential
-opportunities to find jobs within different disciplines, locations, companies, sectors, yet all under the J&J umbrella
Cons
-hierarchical and heavy process - may seem to slow decision-making and progress
-finding work/life balance was challenging at the time
Advice to Senior Management
continue your commitment to employee development - constant training, regular and fair review process, mentoring programs, etc. not only help one improve performance, but also helps build morale
Pros
Brand equity. Global presence. Diversified products / lines of business.
Cons
Bureaucratic. Slow growth in certain business units with limited opportunities for advancement.
Pros
Best, most comprehensive benefits of any company I've ever worked for. Extremely well respected company that is an industry leader in nearly every field they compete in.
Cons
J&J is a HUGE company and sometimes it seems like transparency with what is going on with the company is not always there.
Advice to Senior Management
To try and be as transparent with what is occurring at the company as possible.
Pros
JnJ is a great global organization. I worked at the pharmaceutical branch and I have learned a lot from this summer internship. The people from my department are very nice and helpful.
Cons
The office I worked at located in New Jersey, not an ideal place for young people to work at. It is a big organization so you would expect some lack of response from the top and inter-departmental interaction
Advice to Senior Management
it would be nice to have some entry-level positions for new grads. also it's important to ahve inter-departmental communication and interaction.
Pros
The people
The opportunities
The worldwide exposure
The Structure is flexible because of the decentralization of the company
Cons
Complex Human Resources structure due to decentralization.
A big multinational with lots of employees
Hard to move intentionally but doable
Pros
Credo. people orientation. supportive dignitu
Cons
Abstract top down getting too centralized
Advice to Senior Management
Walk the talk
Pros
J&J has a long history with its credo and it used to drive the company culture - people were ethical, passionate about doing the right thing, and very nice and respectful to one another. It has always been very consumer centric and the decentralization allowed for a very entrepreneurial approach, which was creative even though it was a large corporation. given it's size, there is tremendous opportunity to work in so many different places around the world and so many different brands.
Cons
the recent organizational changes have fractured the culture. there is a tremendous amount of politics and they have cut jobs in half - split between local & global, or execution & strategy - whereas the benefit in the past was being a 'general manager' of a business and owning in end to end. this organizational change has also made the company more centralized - completely counter to its wonderful entrepreneurial structure from before - making the place more like P&G everyday. the saddest bit is that the credo and its values are not as often mentioned, followed or lived as they used to be. You'd think the company would go back to its amazing example of doing the right thing during the tylenol scare of the 80s, but instead there is a culture of CYA and politics (who has the power and who owns the decision) that is disheartening. There have also been an incredible amount of layoffs - every year since 2006.
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that what made you great and different was the credo and decentralization. Don't lose that to try to be P&G - you're not P&G and people leave P&G to come to more creative places like J&J. Live the credo again. Bill Weldon should consider stepping down in light of the issues with recalls, toxic products, and unethical behavior; it's time for new leadership that celebrates the core of what made J&J the most respected company in the world.
