A Great Company With Some Flaws

Production Support (Former Employee)
Sheboygan Falls, WI

I worked at Johnsonville Sausage full-time for more than 5 years

ProsExcellent company values. A culture open to change, growth and challenge. Extraordinary communication between executives and the P2M teams (town hall meetings are a great example). The company genuinely cares about its members and shows it through GPS (Great Performance Share) bonuses, additional incentives, giveaways and a great benefits package.

ConsWork-Life balance is not a primary concern, though it is often brought up as one. There are many initiatives to better the member experience, but not many actually come to fruition. Too much reliance on meetings and not enough action. There is a very strong urgency from middle management to create a conformity in their different teams. Unfortunately, this can have an adverse effect (most of the time resulting in pushing teams further apart).

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some time determining whether those in leadership roles are doing so to be leaders or are simply padding their resume. There are some truly great leaders in the company, and then there are others who simply want to have "leader" on their resume. Don't try to push ideologies and beliefs as much on the membership, instead allow them to develop their own. Celebrate individuality as much as the Johnsonville Way does and you will get much closer to the goal of being "The Best Company in the World (that just happens to make sausage)".

ProsCompetitive pay and benefits. There is a bonus program available to all company employees (referred to as "members" at Johnsonville) based on company profitability and achieving improvement goals on safety, product quality, and customer service. A great culture based on teamwork, respect for every individual, personal growth, innovation, and accountability. Your opinion is sought after and valued.

Positive Work Environment

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Johnsonville Sausage

ProsGreat corporate culture.
Everyone is very friendly and willing to offer help and advice.
Coaching and team building makes it easy to adjust to a new position.

ConsWork environment can be very hectic towards month end. As employees become increasingly busy, mood seems to not be as positive. But this is the same with any company.

Disillusioned Long Term Employee (Member)

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Johnsonville Sausage full-time for more than 10 years

ProsTeam work - working together and helping each other to make sure that product and services are exceptional.
Opinion and expertise are valued.
Wonderful benefits
Bonus program based on profits
Growing and stretching are expected and rewarded.
Higher learning education reimbursement.
Promoting from within, and allowing members to move up based more on their experience and work ethic in their current positions.

ConsMany changes have occurred in the management, structure, and working atmosphere and this has directly impacted my list of cons.
The company has lost much of it's family feel with it's growth over the years.
Duties are now more focused on your job alone, and errors and issues outside of your department (team) are considered not your responsibility. (Less team work).
Education reimbursement has been reduced to a set dollar amount per year.
Less opportunities for advancement within the company, unless you have the requisite degree, and working experience in the area they are looking for.
Opinions and expertise are not valued like they once were, unless they agree with management.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore focus is needed on the "Johnsonville Way", and what is best for the hard working, loyal employees (members) that have greatly contributed to the growth and success of the company.
