    Pros

Fellow employees were good people. The compensation package offered was fair.

    Cons

Expectations were placed but not conveyed. Job responsibilities misrepresented. No clear financial goals outlined.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clearly outline expectations for new outside sales employees with actual sales goals.

I have been working at Johnstone Supply part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fantastic team of people. The industry is challenging as it is constantly evolving, but the team of people I work with really make the job much easier by constantly communicating new information. Online training courses are also becoming more prevalent within the company in order to meet the demands of the fast paced industry.

    Cons

It's extremely hard to get any apparel with company logos. Being that I am a part time employee I don't apply for any of the benefits offered to full time employees; however, the benefits are sub-par. First, the company is not publicly traded, so there are no stock options. Second, there is only a 5% matching bonus for 401K accounts. Third, from what I hear, the other benefits aren't anything special either. The corporate level is also mostly comprised of family members who own the franchise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer better benefits, and encourage employees to work hard in order to move up in the company. Create more positions within the company for different employees to flourish.

I worked at Johnstone Supply full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The fact that most employees have remained for well over 10 years speaks volumes as to the working environment. After 30 years of independent business ownership I spent my last 5 working years surrounded by, with few exceptions, dedicated hard working co-workers. Both pay and benefits were above industry standards. The owner repeatedly showed his care and concern for his employees from actions as simple as celebrating everyone's birthday with a cake to insuring the financial well being of individuals in times of need. This company places an enormous emphasis on employee training and education.

    Cons

Because of the multifaceted aspects of this industry there is a steep learning curve in developing the skill sets necessary to become proficient in handling the day to day activities in a leadership role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to provide key employees with the compensation and benefits commensurate with their dedication and loyalty.

    Cons

    Tough industry to work in
    Lots of emergencies
Not enough time to get stuff done right
    Not enough free company shirts
    too much technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Johnstone Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Other than being employed, there were no pros

    Cons

The store I worked at had a Toxic, negative environment! The owner of the Rochester and Syracuse stores only cared about his pockets and not the employees who were working hard 41+ hours. If there were any positive affirmations, they were: few; far between; and/or back handed!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let the owner talk to the employees, customers, or sales representatives! He is arrogant and has absolutely no people skills!

I have been working at Johnstone Supply full-time

    Pros

Family owned, good pay, close knit group. The owner is engaged with the business and employees and takes the time to know employees outside of work.

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities. If management finds out you are really good in a particular area, they will limit your ability to advance. Cant say that I blame them, but it makes it difficult for those who are eager and have the qualifications both professionally, and academically to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your talent engaged and feeling like there opportunities for advancement or else they will start looking for other opportunities.
