I worked at Juniper Networks as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

You learn how to work within a small team that's part of a larger machine that has many moving parts.

    Cons

Because it's a large company it's hard to see your work's results right away. As an intern your work is not always the highest priority.

    Kind of bureaucratic, not easy to express different ideas from execs;

I worked at Juniper Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Generally, the people within the individual groups that work at the company make the company someplace worthwhile to work at. There is good work-life balance, unless you're engaged on a project, where there isn't any balance and it's all work. The benefits are competitive, but not leading edge. Salaries are generally competitive, but increases are slight.

    Cons

Given the global and off-shore shift for systems development, support and much of the G&A work, there are time delays in response and in many cases, challenges with understanding between the teams. There's been a recent cost cutting shift, which has had significant impacts to most areas, including, staffing reductions, elimination of programs, changes in work environment - moving to a hotel style workplace. Due to budget constraints, any training is typically internal and in many cases, web-based. There's been a definite shift in the cultural values, becoming more short-sighted vs. looking at what's in the best interest in the company long-term.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at how the decisions being made are affecting your employees - seek input from the employee base before significant decisions are made, e.g. to eliminate dedicated workspace.

I have been working at Juniper Networks full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Entry level to mid management have the best intentions, are smart, and generally do not play politics. Diverse workforce and collaborative environment. Good pay.

    Cons

New CEO has not made changes needed at the Exec Team level as it is very dysfunctional (Product, HR, Sales). But he is still new, and can only hope he grows into it. Very passive aggressive environment and upper management does not want to hear the truth or disagree over direction.....people who do well or stick around "play the game", especially at the more senior levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make some changes at the Exec Team level and don't be afraid of activist investor groups.

I worked at Juniper Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pays well, good benefits, somewhat empowered. Good facilities and tools

    Cons

PLM did not know the business and could not make decisions, indecisiveness led to wasted efforts and was late to market. New CEO is chopping the business. Tons of wasted resources on SW architectures that were scrapped at the expense of programs with viable business. Poor management, conviction and execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give business' that are critical to the growth of the company a chance to develop. Nurture and fund them. Some of the business' that you have decided to exit will end up being a huge mistake and end up costing the company much more to re-enter than continuing investment would ever had cost.

I worked at Juniper Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Excellent technology
Top-notch engineers - Development, Support, etc
Sometimes Juniper's direction is down-right visionary
Very professional environment (more than most)
    Excellent facilities, culture, and perks

    Cons

Unfocused: e.g. We acquired companies then dropped them
    Painfully political at times
Volitile, at times even unstable. Your project, product, or job might disappear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every one of you is excellent. However, you occassionally have some awkwardness working with each other. Follow-through on your best ideas, even when the market gets unnerving. Acquire companies only if you are certain the talent/products fit with a long-term strategy -- and follow through! Otherwise, whenever possible, develop the solution in-house; again, you have some of the finest talent in the industry.
