    Pros

If you're looking for an environment where you can spend all day socializing, playing dirty politics, dealing with bureaucracy, and interacting with the most close-minded, unprofessional, and fake colleagues, then this is the place for you.

    Cons

The work at all levels is not challenging, rote, out-dated, inefficient, and no one wants to change a thing. They claim to be "cutting edge" but it's all talk. The knowledge, experience, and expertise to bring the company into the Millenium does not exist; any attempts to "raise the bar" result in a company-wide collaborate effort to quickly, expel the poor soul. If you've ever read the book "21 Dirty Tricks at Work", everyone at this company is very proficient at the swift application of these tactics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up! All those who you think are dedicated, loyal confidants working tirelessly for the best interest of the company are actually working tirelessly to continue maintaining the major cover-up of costly business mistakes, hiding their incompetencies, and keeping the company stagnant in order to continue racking up on unearned bonuses, coerced promotions, and fabricated accomplishments.

The pay is not as competitive as they promote.

    Pros

Good location, looks good on resume. Benefits are fair, fun environment, co-workers were excellent.

    Cons

Management is incompetent. Some don't even understand how a building is built. Management couldn't tell which employees knew their jobs and which didn't. This results in very high turnover due to unfair promotions/firings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Senior Management is the problem

    Pros

Sometimes innovative if the CEO wants to pursue a new fad or technology.

    Cons

Lets get the obvious out of the way. Not a good idea to seek work in a depressed industry. And It becomes a really bad decision if you choose a poorly managed company like this one.
Senior Management is the real problem here with very inconsistent communication, strategy and execution. Even given low marks in Builder Magazine by their peers.
In spite of the representations by HR and hiring managers, policies and procedures are not adhered to, career path depends on favoritism and results are achieved through bullying and partiality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Won't ever happen but need to replace the CEO.

    Pros

Some opportunity for advancement. It is a national comapnay so you have flexibility in positions and opportunities. Performance is recognized and they build a product that you can take pride in as customer satisfaction is number 1 on the priority list.

    Cons

Salary is lower than most of the direct competition. This can make it good for entry level or for those with limited experience to get a start in the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would help to be more candid with lower level employees about company growth, strategy and decision making.

I worked at K. Hovnanian Homes

    Pros

    K. Hovnanian actually builds a well designed home. A lot of thought goes into the engineering and architecture in each new model.

    Cons

    K. Hovnanian has a horrible culture and little respect for its employees. Employees are basically told they are expendable and that they are lucky to have a job. The trades are paid so poorly that they deliver a poor product. "Pay peanuts, get monkeys."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating employees like they are lucky to have a job. The "Quality Department" is running amuck and has not accountability and is creating a worse product.

    Pros

This company cares for its employees and strives to be a good corporate citizen.

    Cons

The corporation must make difficult decisions to survive in the current economic atmosphere, and these decisions are not always easy on a personal level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick with your core values and your customers will be loyal.

I have been working at K. Hovnanian Homes

    Pros

I think that some of their management staff were some of the most respected managers in the business today, they are caring and understanding. They would encourage you to keep up the good work, but as you know anywhere you work you some good and some bad things that can happen. Their overall score for the company is very high.

    Cons

The downside is that they tend to promote those who take others credit, and they tend to promote those who have family members in top positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat everyone the same and promote those who deserve the promotion. If you should hire someone that family is in a management position you should always have them earn their promotions not just give it to them because they are related to someone who works in a top position.

    Pros

It was like working with a big family! We celebrated birthdays, weddings, pregnancy, and other important events in ones life. This made you feel valued as an employee!

    Cons

Changes in management were made and those that came in took advantage of employees. Management was not the same, they could care less how long you had been there, or who you were. They wanted to produce more with less people, which resulted in widespread company layoffs. I will be surprised if the CA division doesn't go under by 2012!
