I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good learning opportunity how to run complex HW+SW engineering project in a diverse global team.

    Stable environment. Reasonable people.

    May enjoy occasional world traveling.

    Cons

Slow growth. Salaries below local average.

People mostly communicate poorly with poor English. People mostly are not capable of learning and adapting to new technologies and innovations.

    Virtually no feedback culture.

    Poor information system.

Hard industry where low hanging fruit have been collected a long time ago - have to work 80% hard to get rest of 20%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

May I suggest to rethink standards for hiring. Use technical case interviews to see candidates in action. Refresh human resources with people who are willing and eager to learn, adapt, change. Make good communication skill as a must, starting with speaking and writing in English.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology is awesome, and KLA is a market leader. The work is interesting in the initial 1-2 years, applications engineering is a lot of travel - which again, is fun initially.

    Cons

Jobs get repetitive - there is only so much you can learn about a tool. Travel is endless - 85% travel is expected. If you don't want to travel, there are people in India and China happy to do it, so your job is easily expendable. The politics in the applications group can be annoying, and the managers are not necessarily chosen on merit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better outsource the entire field support to Asia, and keep only product development in USA, Make more sense and sets expectations right. Choose managers not for their proximity to marketing or their supplicant nature, but rather on merit. Even If that means you have to bring in someone from outside the group or even KLA, it might be a good thing!

    Pros

Fast pace working environment, involving cutting edge technologies and much freedom to explore alternative concepts, materials, techniques, etc. Good people to work with and challenge you to grow in your career.

    Cons

The fast pace can also be a negative when you can not explore in depth the concepts of interest, design decisions have to be made on risk assessment and can not always be backed up with in depth analysis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Beginning the concept work well ahead of the roadmap can allow for a more thorough investigation of new technologies.

IT is just a horrible faction in this company

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the people are not so bitter, but the vast majority are. Those who are not, are managers who cannot get a job elsewhere
The IT managers seem to be able to survive with no great turnover. They kill what little enthusiasm is left. but you need to smile, keep up appearances and continue to go to the team lunches otherwise you may be accused of not being a team player. You need to keep playing the game
Knowledgeable people receive very little respect. It is really shocking but people get used to it since you can easily survive by playing up to your manager and do very little work. Get angry from time to time. It covers your backside and makes you look strong. Again, you need to play the game
Lots of ways to look busy and cruise the internet

    Cons

A really poor and abusive work environment where survival is the key and has been for years
There is really no incentive to do well nor to get ahead since it's never recognized. The key is to go slow and take your time. People have learned that over time
The IT management team do not listen nor do they appreciate the hard work of key individuals only political ones. Look at the complaints made in the annual review year after year. It never ever ever changes
IT low level and senior IT Managers have little credibility and really poor skills and are incredibly incompetent and disliked but play the game very well, so you need to do the same. I don't respect them. I never have. It makes me sick
People are not proud to work here. In fact it is the complete polar opposite. I just tell people I work in IT. I don't tell them I work here
There is an increasingly negative work atmosphere with people desperate to get out. Look around. Compare it to what it was 5 years ago. All the talent has long gone. It's just the old timers here and the sad and pathetic
It's a really terrible company to be associated with. Go do a search for all the bad reviews in this company. You'll find that half of them come from people in IT. They can't all be wrong can they ?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's hard to offer advice when so many have left the IT department or are inclined to leave if they can. Survival is the key. Remember, people may be nice to your face, but behind your back it's every man or woman for themselves. It's sad, but it's real

    Pros

You can pretend to be busy and your clueless manager/senior director will rate you highly.

    Cons

Political, clueless and pompous CIO staff, arrogant managers. Stay around long enough and they will promote you whether you deserve it or not.
Most of KLA is pretty good, especially engineering and product divisions. IT is the pits......

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the entire senior staff including the CIO; bring in a group that has honesty, and integrity as their core values. Promote staff for results, not for playing politics. Economy is picking up- all the good ones are looking hard outside and will leave in droves.

Aggressively managed, and generally well-run. If you had a dollar to invest, you'd want KLA to manage it.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time

    Pros

Process-oriented, as well managed overall as I've seen any company. They make sure to get the most out of their investments, which also includes their people - which may not necessarily be what all employees are looking for. There are still people who want to do the right thing, who keep this place going.

    Cons

Politics abound. People doing consistently good work are not necessarily recognized. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil here more than in most places. There are a few who know what their doing, and seeming cadre of middling mgrs who ride them.
