I worked at KLA-Tencor as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots of good people and manager but terrible CIO

    Cons

Though I was there for a short time it is true that this is about the worst IT department I have ever worked at. I have been working in IT for many years and this is thee most dysfunctional and obnoxious CIO I have ever met. It's unbelievable to me that people stay working there. There are some serious problems with his staff that just go along with whatever he says. Most of the CIO staff is just full of bullies. One of the senior directors even goes around firing people to show his leadership but what he is doing is just doing what the big bully tells him to do. Poor sense of judgement from the senior staff. Unfortunately the poor few that really know what they are doing are completely disregard for doing great work. I agree with the reviews and I wasn't even going to post but this is the worst place ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the CIO and most of his staff.

    Pros

KT is a mid sized company that encourages growth and offers a very good work-life balance. The company works on a very niche area and one can grow laterally as there are many areas that they have their expertise in.

    Cons

The perks are moderate compared to big companies and sometimes there is a lot of pressure to meet the deadlines

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There's always a lot of work to do, even if it is without purpose.

    Cons

I reported sexual harassment and illegal working conditions to HR. Next thing you know I'm put on a 'performance improvement plan with no legitimate reasoning.

One of the core values of KLA-Tencor is Honest Forthright and Consistent. I fail to see that in upper management and it seems like a huge joke to keep employees in line.

KLA-Tencor hires mainly foreigners so they are desperate to keep their job to stay in the US and will do anything to make sure that happens, even if it means working 24/7. People are generally miserable.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great technical challenges. Great engineers / coworkers.

    Cons

Bad middle management. Looks like middle management, at least in systems, is selected from engineers who are clueless about managing and listening to their reports. We are micromanaged and told to do whatever managers think would promote them.

Atrocious IT preventing people from doing their jobs. Tickets are sent to India and nothing gets fixed. Friends in the Valley describe much better experiences. I cannot even access Google at work and IT couldn't fix that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Fire IT managers.

Train middle management. Enable engineers to pursue their ideas and don't shut them up.

    Pros

It makes me upset to see all these people complaining about IT at KLA when they're part of the problem and in fact nothing ever gets done. No one takes IT seriously. They are a joke of a division. The number of people who have spoken out are testament to that.

    Cons

The managers are horrendous to deal with. They feel entitled particularly the ones who have been here for years. Someone complained on this forum about the CIO's lack of ambition when in fact they themselves have stayed in the same SAP support position for years. I don't respect any of them. I've witnessed so many changes and lack of trust and respect everywhere.

Sadly it will never change. It is endemic. The only way to get ahead is to play the game i.e to look busy, big yourself up and put others down. It is the KLA IT way. Or should I say, it's their way or the highway.

I stay because I have to, despite all of that. It feels hopeless

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As someone mentioned earlier. Get rid of the poor IT managers who we all complain about. They are poisonous

Response to the original negative post on IT and the CIO on Sept 25 and the subsequent positive post

    I worked at KLA-Tencor

    Pros

Smart people, but none in IT

    Cons

Re the post about the Sr. Dir firing people- LOL, that guy is a survivior; he has been politicking his way through his last 20+ years @ KLA - he is Teflon- nothing touches him - others take the hit for him. He has been waiting to make CIO for the past 10 years- hope he makes it, just for his political savvy and survival skills.
As for the positive post, pretty certain it was by one of the CIOs stooges, and his close ally, upon his request, to offset all the negative posts about IT.
That pretty much sums up the IT dept @ KLA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As the economy heats up, it will be harder to retain good people who are genuine, not interested in politics, and are looking for a decent pace to work in.
