Pros
Great opportunities for learning and continued growth. Well recognized experience that you can leverage if you decide to leave the public accounting field.
Cons
Lots of hours and the feeling of being slightly underpaid. I also feel as if not enough time is really given for someone to pursue areas that they truly enjoy
Advice to Senior Management
Put more trust in younger people and place incentive and advancement strucure in a wY that rewRds those that are doing the best work not on seniority
Pros
The atmosphere provides for unlimited growth and learning in a variety of industries and practices. Management is very knowledgable and acknowledge the needs of staff.
Cons
The hours can be crazy. It was not unusual to work over 70 hours a week during busy season. Deadlines can create a lot of stress.
Advice to Senior Management
Maintain communication with the staff of the company to keep them motivated about the direction and position of the company.
Pros
Without a doubt, the best place to launch a career. Unparalleled experience and good pay. Sometimes you have to travel, but you're always taken care of. If you have the opportunity to join, don't think twice - you will regret it later.
Cons
Experience at this firm is very dependent on your immediate supervisor, but if you stick it out, you will find your place within the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep track of individual employees to make sure they don't get "lost in the shuffle", are learning, and keeping a good balance.
Pros
Generally, KPMG is a good option for launching a career. The people who work at KPMG are hardworkers and high achievers. It is nice to be surrounded by individuals at a similar stage in life with similar goals. KPMG provides good global mobility, however the mobility within a local area or state is limited by the availability of large businesses and clients. Having been with the firm for nearly two years I am still proud of the integrity with which KPMG conducts business and the high level of "professional care" exhibited by the employees.
Cons
The downside to working at KPMG is the up or out culture. Each year KPMG hires a large start class of fresh college graduates, need them or not. This has lead to lay-offs, which create an atmosphere of unease and fear.
Advice to Senior Management
Hiring should be slowed in conjunction with the slowing economic climate.
Pros
the people are the best
Cons
the hours are the worst
Advice to Senior Management
The new folks comming in expect a lot in benefits with fewer hours.
Pros
Big four accounting name recognition
Cons
Lack of dedication to improving technology. Inability of senior management to view the relevant issues vs. unimportant documentation excercises. Lack of loyalty throughout the organization
Advice to Senior Management
Treat people decently and they will repay you through loyalty and hard work.
