I worked at KPMG full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

To be fair there are many benefits to working for a Big Four accounting firm. You will learn a ton of new information and you will grow as an employee. Employees get to work with many talented people. Not to mention a job at a Big Four looks great on your resume.

    Cons

On the downside, if you look at the Best Places to work lists - you will find KPMG either listed below every other Big Four firm or completely absent from the list. Top management can make all the excuses they want but it comes down to two primary issues. Management loves to take credit for success but blames underlings for failures. Either way you aren't going to share in the money pouring into the firm. Second, management likes to play favorites and no one seems to be willing to reel these managers in. Companies need to be able to show why one employee was promoted over another and in many cases a halfway good lawyer could prove that this was not the case. Over the years I watched countless talented employees jump ship to the other Big Four Accounting firms. As a result, many people who do remain and work up to Partner or Principal aren't the best and brightest. The few fantastic partners/managers remaining have a very long list of employees trying to get into their group. If you find yourself working for this firm and want anything other than a very, very slow climb to the top - take as many classes as you can and constantly look for a position at one of the other Big Four Accounting firms. Many people I know jumped ship with their manager to a new firm and even entire departments have left together. After working one too many 100+ hour work weeks for this firm I left and I would argue that any firm that loses an entire Practice group to a competitor - isn't some place you want to be long term.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees with technical expertise! Seriously, how many people need to leave before you get the message? There are some groups with lazy and vacuous employees running the show - all competent employees have left. The support groups are no better and in one case on the West Coast the employees constantly post pictures of themselves skipping out of work early and drinking. In this economy you can't hire someone who actually wants to work - really?

I worked at KPMG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to start your career. It allows you access to see what it is like to work at various companies while you audit them. This company / position will teach you a lot about important compliance related topics and how they apply to various business.

    Cons

They budgets are usually un-realistic. Managers want staff to work extra hard to reduce the risk to the firm, while they agree with clients to reduce the number of hours in our budgets. This causes many engagements to have too much to do and not enough time to finish it in. Also, the biggest thing is that most of the Directors & Managers in IT Advisory in OC are old CPA accounting personnel who don't know a thing about IT. It was laughable how many IT managers had to be educated by their staff regarding basic IT principles.

    Pros

Smart and well-rounded coworkers that are enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

The office I worked in was highly political. Management is not upfront and honest about things when straightforward communication is needed. Especially when critiques need to be made, management too focused on avoiding confrontation.

    Advice to Management

People on the ground did not always have a great deal of respect for the project owner (usually a director).

I have been working at KPMG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are by and large very bright and management gives great opportunities to up and coming junior staff. There are good training programs in place. A great place to challenge yourself and learn.

    Cons

Expectations are high, and you will put in the hours. Management Consultants generally can expect to travel to work from other cities (Mon-Thurs) each week - not too common to be staffed on local projects. Getting promoted requires that you nurture your own network and to some politicking.
