Great stepping stone to start a career, but not pursue one in KPMG

Consultant (Current Employee)

I have been working at KPMG full-time for more than 3 years

ProsVast opportunities for various training

ConsLow pay
Lot of discretion on partners and not much accountability

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease pay. Reward individuals below manager level.

Great brand and intelligent colleagues, work highly varied

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I have been working at KPMG full-time for more than a year

ProsSenior client contacts, string brand, challenging work, varied engagements

ConsNever quite sure who the boss is (makes the decision). I have often got the client, two different partners and a service line head pulling in different directions. Very little working together across partner revenue streams.

Advice to Senior ManagementSaying your career is all up to you may sound great in theory but in practice it isolates people, supports predatory revenue behaviour, requires employees to solve the problem when it is a management problem and abrogates responsibility for employee engagement. One dimensional behaviours and OMS game playing become the norm. It also encourages personality based self promotion and the 'quiet' performers will be left behind.

Good learning curve with support

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I worked at KPMG

Pros- Access to resources
- Company-funded training sessions
- Relaxed atmosphere, yet serious about work
- Great social events
- A lot of fun

Cons- Unsure about what was considered acceptable behaviour and what wasn't. Then again, my experience was skewed given that I worked as a temporary employee without going through their formal induction program.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone really. The leadership was well respected and lead by example. They were approachable people, but not necessarily as accessible due to their workload.

Great place to gain experience - but get out after a few years

Manager (Current Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I have been working at KPMG

Pros- young workforce
- opportunities to study
- advisory work can be challenging and rewarding
- great experience

Cons- poor work life balance - hours are long
- progression depends on who you know / having a good advocate at more senior levels
- HR are hopeless
- at the end of the day, you are a money making resource, not a human being
- limited support, very often thrown in the deep end

KPMG provides reasonable client exposure, good work life balance but there is too much politics!

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I have been working at KPMG

ProsGood work life balance
There is opportunity to get exposed to senior leadership within client organisations
In Australia, KPMG is a fairly well regarded brand, so one can move to other jobs quite easily

ConsToo much politics with regard to performance reviews, promotions
Over staffed teams
Very heirarchical firm structure
Poor communication from leadership

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople are your biggest asset - respect them!
