ProsWork/Life, people, management generally makes decent decisions which is always nice. Minneapolis office full of smart, hard working, and nice people.

ConsMarket prices make profitability challenging / not great branding in the market makes it tough

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great place to work if you're young and ambitious

Director Advisory (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at KPMG full-time for more than 10 years

ProsObsessive focus on clients and business problems. A great way to learn about businesses across a number of industries. Work you like a dog but you learn a lot. KPMG hires smart and energetic people so you will be surrounded by interesting and stimulating co-workers who challenge you to come up with ever more creative solutions to clients' issues. Perhaps the most entrepreneurial culture of any Big Four firm. Great place to build a career if you are a self-starter.

ConsHard work and long hours, especially for management-level folks who do the proposal writing and backstop delivery. Occasional bait-and-switch with bonuses. Partners are stretched so thin that they are unavailable for important meetings. Lots of travel (could be a pro for some). Career paths are not well-defined (especially for those with superior technical skills) and it takes a lot of determination to get the guidance and training needed to advance and keep skills sharp. Budgets for external training are poorly defined and approvals are completely discretionary, which makes it difficult for staff-level personnel to get anything other than internal training.

Advice to Senior ManagementHR and new performance management system (High Performance Culture) suck. Advisory University is a poor substitute for other types of training. Protect training budgets more: training budget is often available when everybody is busy and can't get to training, but it is the first thing to be cut when things slow down and people have more availability for training.

Great people but partners like to oversell

Senior Associate (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at KPMG

Prosgreat audit clients and good training... good learning out of school..great vacation and flexibility out side of busy season.

Consunder staffed jobs, too many administrative duties and change is not managed. different templates to do your work every other day. sampling was a mess. did not let people move in the firm easily.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease dont under staff jobs by using the 'busy season' excuse. also listen to your loyal employees when then want to try something different and don't string them along with the 'one more busy season' excuse.

KPMG is a great place to start a career in accounting.

Senior Audit Associate (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at KPMG

ProsIf you're sure that you want to pursue a long-term career in accounting then KPMG is a great place to start your career as it will provide you with endless accounting related opportunities. In general, the auditing profession provides you with a great opportunity to see many different companies and gain a better understanding of business. KPMG-Minneapolis has a great set of clients unmatched by the other big 4 firms in Minneapolis.

ConsThe profession has a way of pigeon-holing you into a career in accounting, so I would suggest starting out in industry instead if you're not certain that accounting is the path for you. The KPMG-Minneapolis works alot of hours which is a product of having a great set of clients (ie. always work to be done).

Advice to Senior ManagementWork to implement a better system for resource scheduling (ie. all teams should work together for the greater good of the office).
