Pros
You will learn a ton, work with a lot of talented people (and some dumb ones), and can make great contacts in the accounting community.
Cons
You will work like a slave. You have plenty of time off, but will always feel guilty using it, unless you're dying.
Advice to Senior Management
Spend more time and money mentoring the Associates. Have more work-sponsored social functions. Offer more formal training opportunities. Take it easy on the billable hours.
Pros
Excellent work experience, training, industry experience, and working with only the best and brightest. The Sacramento office is a diamond in the rough in that you get to work on many different clients in many different industries as opposed to working on one or two clients all year long. The company does try to treat their employees well, however the downturn in the economy has made this more difficult.
Cons
Demanding, limited work life balance, and for the amount of work expected pay should be higher. At times, it almost seems like a contest to see who can work the longest or who can work more hours during a time cycle. Everyone says not to eat hours, but you will.
Advice to Senior Management
None, unfortunately this is how public accounting has and always will be run.
Pros
There is opportunity for advancement and you will learn fast (in part becasue turnover is huge). Big 4 firms will look good on your resume. You work with smart people (who generally leave soon after starting).
Cons
In general, smaller markets mean you won't work on large or public clients. There's no work life balance. It seems management doesn't care about employees. You might be out of town for months. You will have no life at "home" when you get back. If you stay with the firm you can expext the people you become friends with to leave. Requests for certain types of assignments are ignored in favor of convenienceof management.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees if you care about retention.
Pros
kpmg looks good on your resume. good focus on training.
Cons
not very good on work life balance. assigned to a three month project where time off had to be preapproved before project began. all other time including time off for funerals had to be made up.
Advice to Senior Management
promote based on people skills as well as technical skills
