I have been working at Kaiser Permanente full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay. Unionized. Strict loyalty to current employees. RN morale is overall higher than RNs at competition hospitals. Outstanding benefits.

    Cons

The expectations of management are very high because the standard of care is very high. It can sometimes seem as though your best is not enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale is nothing to become complacent about. I hope Kaiser continues to be the company all RNs would like to work for.

I have been working at Kaiser Permanente

    Pros

Very good health benefits - the only way I could support my family of three by myself.

    Cons

It is not great for personal growth or getting rid of ineffective and sometimes questionable managers. It is pretty good for work life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the day to day infrastructure. Most computing environments in KP-IT are several years out of date.

  10. A great big corporate Sweat Shop for sonographers.

I worked at Kaiser Permanente as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

You'll learn how to scan faster!

They do maintain a strict policy regarding patient relatives trying to bum-rush the sonographer to be with the patient.

They have policies and they do enforce to them, which is something i absolutely respect. The management will back up their techs. Which is very rare in the radiology field.

Certain techs are very helpful if you fall behind on your schedule.

    Cons

High turnover for travelers. If you don't "cut it" in that environment, which is mostly female.. You are OUT. I came in as a replacement, while 2 travelers were getting the old "heave ho" a couple of days before i showed up.

Extremely high volume, high stress environment. If you show up to work 5 mins. late, it is publicly documented on a post-it note, depending on who's in charge.

If you are not "up to par", it is discussed openly from the clerk to the manager. You will have to deal with a huge clique environment, thus you have to "earn the right" to be one of the inner circle.

You do not have "morning" or "evening" breaks. They are all combined in your lunch hour.

You can not have any beverages i.e., bottled water in your assigned room. Snacks must be kept in the break room at all times. If you are caught with these items in your room, you are literally ratted on by certain techs. Also admin will occasionally do a inspection sweep of each person's room. If caught, you will be reprimanded.

Not for people who can do high volume at their own pace and still get the job done. Everything here is structured.

Each exam must be performed within 20 mins. or less - no mistakes. 16 exams per day. Your exams are scheduled every 1/2 hour which includes 3 to 4 OB exams a day including fingers, toes, Aorta, etc. This time also includes you presenting your exams to the rads before letting the patient go.

If you have inpatient rotation day, don't be alarmed if you walk into your room, and see a patient already in their "ready to go".. even before your start time.

If you are self-motivated, work independently, efficiently - but at your own pace? This is not the place for you. It's basically a sweat shop for patients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no advice. Obviously, productivity is the corporations bottom line.
