I have been working at Kal Tire (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Best training program around
Wage Progression system does work well…as long as the manager "signs" you off…if he needs to save money, you'll be waiting

    Cons

Promises made are rarely kept they tell you what you want to hear and really don't value their employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

50/50 is not the end all/be all to your staff…treat them right and they will be loyal…I know lots who have left the company behih…they left their bonus's behind as well…none had any regret

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Kal Tire part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Front Line staff are funny.
Yet, beware - it's a ruse; an attempt to put the customer at ease while they sell you overpriced tires and annoy you with their upselling tactics.

    Cons

Some of their upselling tactics are very annoying and downright unethical.
One fine example would be a wheel alignment that is not necessary because it's slightly out of spec. So what!
Unless a vehicle is pulling left or right, a wheel alignment is completely unnecessary.

Overpriced services - look folks: go anywhere else to get your tires changed. Kal Tire is way overpriced by a large margin.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unnecessary services = unethical business practices = bad publicity.

I worked at Kal Tire full-time

    Pros

None, I can remember unless you want to live in the interior

    Cons

Horrible kind of politics. Lots of boss pleasers. Pretty much a tyrant run IT department. Avoid at any cost. The management openly bad mouths employees about other employees. The meetings are about petty expenses about how to save every dollar and there are lengthy debates over the issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think how many long term people left the department.

I have been working at Kal Tire full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great sense of belonging/team/Kal Family
    - Career advancement programs are in place and appear successful in most regions.
    - Majority of management have a good "open door" policy and are willing to talk/listen
    - Good at expressing verbal thanks/words for job done.
    - Getting better with compliance of labor laws.

    Cons

    - It appears the company wants to pay as little as possible to an employee, just an "average" compensation & benefits "industry average" instead of an impressive payment and benefits package (based on estimated global Kal Tire revenue, they should be able to provide higher then "average" easily)
    - Sometimes feel like an opinion is not heard or cared about.
    - Divorce rate among managers is high, can't seem to balance the demand to run a store/company with the dedication need to nurture a family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - The 50/50 profit sharing sounds great and is great in theory, but the "sharing" part appears to be pretty skewed. Store management (Zone managers and up in particular) are paid peanuts all year in the hopes that that once a year "profit share" is a big win. For some, at the top SZM (Senior Zone Manager) it has been rumored that the annual payout has been as high as $200k (or even higher)!! Not so for store staff.
    - Pay your support staff more. The amount of money the top tiers of management is making must be ridiculously high. Spread it out some more, help that middle class of dedicated staff who are giving up HOURS AND HOURS of family time to make this company run.
    - Don't make your staff pay for the Christmas parties. Anything "mandatory" (meetings/ training) needs to be compensated or done on work time.
    - Use company wide (all divisions) profits for the 50/50 profit share (despite the resistance that a group or two will provide).

I have been working at Kal Tire full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

ok experience, compensation is acceptable, good start for people in automotive industry

    Cons

2 on 2 off shifts are ridiculous. 10 and a half hour work day is way to long, plus no 15 minute coffee breaks and you just a half hour for lunch. When the shop is busy sometimes you don't even get a lunch break. They make you sign a contract to agree to these shifts. If you don't sign you lose your job.

marketing meetings and partners meetings are after hours, unpaid, and mandatory. If you are not working on the day of the meeting you still have to take time out of your day to go to the meeting. no compensation for personal time / travel.

Unrealistic expectations for employees, they expect full mechanical inpections to be done in less than 15 minutes. there is no way to accurately and fully check a car in that amount of time, yet they expect you to find everything thats wrong with the vehicle so they can sell a job. they also expect all jobs to be done at a ridiculously fast pace throughout the day. (keep in mind that this is a labour intensive job and a 10 and a half hour work day)

some stores are understaffed and overworked. people at the front counter don't seem to know how many work orders is too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-get rid of 2 on 2 off shifts or implement at least two 15 minute coffee breaks
-give some sort of compensation for meetings, we take time out of our day off to come
-give more realistic expectations to employees, quality of work suffers if expectation for speed is too high
-manage number of staff according to workload
-stop treating the people working in the shop as machines, we're human too

I worked at Kal Tire full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Very enticing profit share program (if your store is profitable most are not)
Will provide all the training you want
Tell management trainees that if they stick with it you will be rewarded
Give you the idea that you can make "management decisions"

    Cons

Management will lie to trainees to get them to work longer hours
Will not pay extra compensation when you work over desginated hours stated in the contract
    Zero feedback
Upper management will talk down to you if you ask for guidance in regards to customer matters
Favortisim with managers- if you do not fit in you will not last long
Zero integrity in regards to promises

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have to utmost integrity with customers transfer that integrity to you employees so that they may strive to be better
