I have been working at Kansas City Life full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

KC Life offers great stability of employment, friendly coworkers, low stress environment. They have been in business for over 100 years, and will likely be in business for a long time. Hours are typically 8-4:15 so it is not a sweatshop. 401k match is very good at 8% after a few years.

    Cons

The compensation is on the low end for peers, but somewhat made up by an above average 401k match. Operating profit growth is non existent for many years. A better effort to raise total compensation to peer averages should be made to retain top talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The game plan should be to grow the company, not just to keep from failing. Upper management could use a major shakeup in order to change the direction, but will likely not happen due to Bixby family ownership.

I have been working at Kansas City Life full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are no pros to working here

    Cons

Management top heavy. I felt like I was working at an adult daycare. Absolutely no autonomy because you are micro managed to death.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No stock company would operate this inefficiently.

    Pros

Company pays great attention to building maintenance so it always looks nice inside and out. They offer free parking and a fully staffed cafeteria with good food.

    Cons

Divisions of this company unknowningly micro manage their employees who for the most part are fully capable of handling the workload.

I have been working at Kansas City Life

    Pros

Work hours are convenient - 8:00am to 4:15pm

    Cons

Not the smartest group of folks. Lots of positioning and paternalistic thinking. Stuck in the 1950's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a way to hear what employees think and value their input. Understand that employees need some non-monetary rewards and encouragement. Have some fun. Build morale through simple rewards like ice cream sundae breaks in the summer, health and fitness rewards, an updated cafeteria menu with healthful and innovative food.

I have been working at Kansas City Life as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The camaraderie among co-workers and seeing that they actually care about you is important to me.
If I was unsure what the project was, or what something meant, I could always ask without ridicule.
The flexibility with hours while in the exam process and during school.
I was always learning and there was always something to work on.

    Cons

Some things could be updated to newer and faster technology.
Yes the cafeteria food could go on a healther course, but bring your own lunch if you don't like it.
