I have been working at Kaplan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Well intentioned folks who really care about education, that's true. And it's a place to work on some juicy projects, if you're in the right division, because the company lives up to its ethos of "constant change/improvement."

    Cons

Weak at committing to long-term strategies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get in the field, talk to your middle managers and line employees -- learn what will really get folks energized.

    Pros

Learned a lot of new stuff. Working environment was good and all the employees were really nice and helpful.

    Cons

It is really not much to mention. I would say people are too nice. Working hours are great as well.

I worked at Kaplan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The team at Kaplan is great, and the training is comprehensive so it's an excellent stepping stone for a first career.

    Cons

After that however, there is little room for upward mobility and the starting pay, even with yearly raises will never be enough to sustain living in New York. During peak season you'll often work overtime, but unless your time is cleared in advance, you won't receive overtime pay.

Former Employee - Various Positions In Test Prep Unit, Through Mid-management in New York, NY

I worked at Kaplan full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - generally great, smart people
    - opportunities (outside of sales and marketing roles) to sink teeth into great projects
    - does a better job than most tutoring companies of treating their instructors with respect
    - overall, does a good job delivering on promised value to customers (in the test prep market, at least)

    Cons

    - constantly changing, with no demonstrated capability for managing change well
    - tries to employ management and marketing tactics (such as agile PM methods, marketing through social networks) commonly utilized by more successful companies, but never really fully commits resources to these efforts, which contribute to frequent failure
    - middle management (director-level field employees) are gnerally dismissive or unskilled at management, which is in part a function of poor organization, and in part a function of a work culture that values talking about work rather than working
    - continued loss of market share in Kaplan's graduate programs makes many positions related to that market tenuous
    - has a tendency to promote/tolerate self-aggrandizement in employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a far more honest look at your field operation (incredible that after all that money and time spent with consultants you still didn't get it right), stop constantly committing to and then quickly dropping projects, and get rid of some of the dead wood you have hanging around. Too many talkers and "thinkers" and "re-imaginers", but not enough honest workers.

I worked at Kaplan full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

a lot of friendly people. People are usually talkative and try to get to know you. They keep you in the know. Always working on something for the community at large.

    Cons

too few raises or bonuses. They will have you work two jobs, with no raise or recognition for as long as possible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat the people that work behind the scenes like people

I have been working at Kaplan part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good money, fun class interactions and a great way to get experience. Anyone who wants to get into teaching should jump on this kind of job. It's about the best experience you can get.

    Cons

Not necessarily the easiest place to advance internally unless you have a degree. And the amount of hours can fluctuate depending upon the time of the year. If you can get enough hours, though, it's a great part time gig.

I have been working at Kaplan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great people.
    Decent out-of-college job.

    Cons

    Low to fair pay.
    Unqualified management
    Not very organized
    Lack of meritocracy
    Limited room for growth
    Rampant favortism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be a bit more understanding. Management should seek efficiency with the input of staff. Also, management should be willing to help student advisors climb the corporate ladder instead of being threatened by new talent.
