Good place to start a career

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe team at Kaplan is great, and the training is comprehensive so it's an excellent stepping stone for a first career.

ConsAfter that however, there is little room for upward mobility and the starting pay, even with yearly raises will never be enough to sustain living in New York. During peak season you'll often work overtime, but unless your time is cleared in advance, you won't receive overtime pay.

good place to start a career, but not to maintain or finish one

Various Positions In Test Prep Unit, Through Mid-management (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

    Pros- generally great, smart people
    - opportunities (outside of sales and marketing roles) to sink teeth into great projects
    - does a better job than most tutoring companies of treating their instructors with respect
    - overall, does a good job delivering on promised value to customers (in the test prep market, at least)

Cons- constantly changing, with no demonstrated capability for managing change well
    - tries to employ management and marketing tactics (such as agile PM methods, marketing through social networks) commonly utilized by more successful companies, but never really fully commits resources to these efforts, which contribute to frequent failure
    - middle management (director-level field employees) are gnerally dismissive or unskilled at management, which is in part a function of poor organization, and in part a function of a work culture that values talking about work rather than working
    - continued loss of market share in Kaplan's graduate programs makes many positions related to that market tenuous
    - has a tendency to promote/tolerate self-aggrandizement in employees

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a far more honest look at your field operation (incredible that after all that money and time spent with consultants you still didn't get it right), stop constantly committing to and then quickly dropping projects, and get rid of some of the dead wood you have hanging around. Too many talkers and "thinkers" and "re-imaginers", but not enough honest workers.

Kaplan treats you very well....until they are done with you

    Recruiter (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

Prosa lot of friendly people. People are usually talkative and try to get to know you. They keep you in the know. Always working on something for the community at large.

Constoo few raises or bonuses. They will have you work two jobs, with no raise or recognition for as long as possible.

Advice to Senior Managementtreat the people that work behind the scenes like people

    Get Part Time Work!!!

    SAT Instructor (Current Employee)
    Garden City, NY

ProsGood money, fun class interactions and a great way to get experience. Anyone who wants to get into teaching should jump on this kind of job. It's about the best experience you can get.

ConsNot necessarily the easiest place to advance internally unless you have a degree. And the amount of hours can fluctuate depending upon the time of the year. If you can get enough hours, though, it's a great part time gig.

    On Its Way

    Program Coordinator (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThere is an opportunity to really carve out a place for yourself. You will be rewarded for being a self starter with an entrepreneurial spirit.

ConsThere is not much monetary support for professional development opportunities

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more learning opportunities to staff to reduce turnover rates.

It has been a learning experience.

    Kaplan Student Advisor (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

    ProsGreat people.
    Decent out-of-college job.

    ConsLow to fair pay.
    Unqualified management
    Not very organized
    Lack of meritocracy
    Limited room for growth
    Rampant favortism.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should be a bit more understanding. Management should seek efficiency with the input of staff. Also, management should be willing to help student advisors climb the corporate ladder instead of being threatened by new talent.

    Somewhere in between....

    Middle Management (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsPeople are great. You make some great friends and there's the potential that if people like you, you can move up in the organization. There's also a big push to make it a better place to work which is really cool. Lastly, being able to work from home is a big plus.

ConsSometimes management really misses the mark in terms of recognizing the people who are actually keeping the ship afloat. There seems to be a real reluctance (or blissful ignorance) when it comes to recognizing the real doers within this company. It can be really frustrating if you're more of a doer and less of a talker.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward the right people and hold those accountable who never actually deliver on their lofty promises or who actually end up costing the company money and reputation as opposed to actually contributing anything of lasting worth. It's a shame that you reward talkers more than doers, and it's a shame that you don't invest in the people who are/were truly invested in the company and in making the organization great!
