I have been working at Kelley Blue Book full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fast paced environment, company has grown quickly has evolved in a short amount of time. Teams work very cross-functionally

    Cons

The changing environment has caused some churn in employees. Now that the company is owned by a bigger entity, the culture has changed somewhat to more traditional corporate atmosphere. The health benefits used to be steller before the takeover. Now it seems subpar, at least for this area.

I worked at Kelley Blue Book full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Back in the days:
    - co-workers
    - good attitude/ pleasant atmosphere
    - immediate supervisor helpful, honest

    Cons

Middle management team is an absolute nightmare to work with. Constantly jockeying for position, throwing people under the bus, silly politics and unbelievably LARGE egos with limited knowledge and skill sets to back it up. This alone was enough to make most people leave (except for 'lifers.). With the sale to Autotrader, well, it has actually gotten worst for most departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management may have good intentions and a plan, but until the middle management layer is cleaned up, high doubt that you can keep your people happy. And no, hiring your best friends with no experience to lead their teams is definitely not a step in the right direction.

I have been working at Kelley Blue Book full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great work life balance and very smart people, for now.

    Cons

Very heavy top-down management from parent company in Atlanta.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

KBB has a great history and culture, but the biggest mistake they did was letting AutoTrader acquire them. In the past year and half since its acquisition, AutoTrader has sent its people in to fill as many vacancies as possible and instituted many top-down decisions that are resulting in a rapid change to the KBB culture.

KBB is rapidly moving from a fast-paced, get it done quickly approach to one of endless documents and presentations. You could really thrive in the old environment. Really sad that is slowly going away. Many people are already leaving, and with them a wealth of talent and knowledge. Benefits and work/life balance were good, but I expect that to change too. The old KBB will be missed.

Advice to management - Let the spirit of KBB continue! Promote from within KBB, not just send people from Atlanta to fill all of our vacancies. Trust the KBB team to do the right thing. Stop second guessing every little thing that KBB does.

I have been working at Kelley Blue Book

    Pros

As a developer it is refreshing to work with the latest technologies. KBB.com are enthusiastic about available technologies.

    Cons

As a free service to the consumer, and as with most companies, chasing revenue dictates how projects should be completed. As a result, projects are driven from peers higher up in the company. Consequently, being able to take a deep dive into the available technologies is limited and developers are left performing rudimentary tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more trust into the people you hire.
