    Pros

Good benefits, paid holidays and time-off, company thoroughly educates employees on products, easy to move-up.

    Cons

Your experience will depend on what store you work at, some are far better than others and all have very different managerial styles.

    Pros

Decent benefits, laid back. We get breaks and a lunch break. That's all I have to say about that.

    Cons

The new management has been harassing some people lately for no reason other than to feel power over them. All they care about is getting finished product done but they don't care at what cost. The company is run like a rusty machine. Employee morale is down and most don't care about doing a good job anymore since they're always feeling like management is out to get them. There is a union but it's barely there, not worth contributing to.

    Advice to Management

Back off the employees a bit and let us do our jobs comfortably. Product will get put out, we're not slaves!

    Pros

Great people in all positions of the company. Everyone is cooperative and is willing to help if you're unsure of how to do something or what to recommend. Management listens to you and will take what you say into consideration. The customer comes first above all else.

    Cons

People working in the store are spread too thin and consequently can't always give the level of service that is expected.

    Advice to Management

Provide more hands-on training. Don't let the computer training be the primary format for getting product information into the hands of the employees.

    Pros

Opportunities are always there to take on higher positions. Crew sizes are usually suitable to service customer traffic. Low competition.

    Cons

Wide range of marginalizing going on within the company as a way to keep your pay low. Upper management is not very effective in hiring decent store managers. Most tools provided to employees to service customers are out dated. Propaganda about being a leader in the paint industry has yet to be proven.

    Advice to Management

Pay worthy employees who break there back and jump through fire hoops proper compensation. Stop allocating random products to stores with low sales volume. Get your hands dirty and stop running your stores like a plantation. Stop marginalizing individuals so that you can keep them where they are because it's wrong.

    Pros

    You can learn and sell

    Cons

Won't get a raise at all and They don't contribute one penny to the 401k. The pension takes 5 years of employment to be vested and it's nothing. They expect professional results but don't pay you as the professional you are.

    Advice to Management

We need raises and real opportunity

  10. In California KM is strong due to the volume of stores, however, if you live outside California you may reconsider KM.

    Pros

Great experience or maybe I should I say "ride", however, I wouldn't want to do it again. I had a great manager. OK place to get customer service experience for an intern.

    Cons

Focused way to much on the housing market painter and not enough on the commercial painter market. KM is having a very hard time competing with the likes of SW, PPG or any companies outside of California. KM is regionally based: within California all is well, but outside of that state all is not well. The ESOP value now seems worthless for a employees future retirement, it seems to be a slush fund for the asbestos lawsuits. Huge problem: too many inexperienced people placed in management positions over the store operations, it's negatively effected the company.

    Advice to Management

I realize the dilemma when balancing sales and store operations (controlling issues) and I felt it may have hurt the company. Sales should be the #1 focus and should not take a back seat to the ever present downsizing of store operations. During my tenure, I saw a great sales team being held back due to store operations. If you don't have sales due to store operations you'll be in a world of hurt, and there you sit. You must go national if the company is to survive. Salaries should be more and the 401 matching should be increased, store personnel training should be a priority. Consider the competitions benefit packages and how they treat a family of employees. Where is KM going to be in 5 years?
