Positive work environment with personal flexibility in corporate office

Analyst (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSolid learning experience. I am able to work on interesting projects and grow a lot. The work environmnet is very flexible and allows for family time as needed. 19 days vacation for those with less than 5 years of experience, which bumps to 24 days afterwards.

ConsPay is not bad, but not particularly competitive. Management seems disconnected between the various business segments. Shrinking business.
Lots of pushback on expenses, even getting small events funded can be a challenge.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet loose the purse strings. Culture seems a bit rigid.

Great Learing experience

Senior Claim Adjuster (Former Employee)
Plymouth Meeting, PA

I worked at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

ProsAlways looking to increase your knowledge. I was taking an excel class that was a great experience. I looked forward to applying to new classes and it was encouraged

ConsKemper was downsizing and I and several others were laid off in 2013. I was in the middle of taking an excel class and I didn't get to finish. Very disappointing.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore divisional training. Most classes were done on a PC with several hundred employees attending. A Lot of questions with took up a lot of time.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThey give you a good amount of PTO. However hard to get off when you want to since there are not enough employees.

Constaking 80 to 100 calls per day as an underwriter

Advice to Senior ManagementWhy, they just don't care.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Kemper, a good company struggling to find its way

Vice President (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood work life balance, good benefits, opportunities for advancement, commitment to employee education, A rated by rating agencies, good reputation in the marketplace.

ConsNot an industry leader in compensation, struggling to identify a clear strategic direction, multiple technology platforms that aren't fully integrated

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider articulating a clear vision for the company to the employees

Been here 10 years, worked in a variety of positions.

Claims (Current Employee)
Dallas, TX

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe people I work with. The opportunity for advancement if you apply yourself. Good pay. Flexible hours and occasional telecommuting.

ConsSome people get promoted because the boss likes them, not based on their skills. Lots of restructuring lately. Lots of rumors about layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to keep the rumor mill at bay by letting us know what's going on.

Negative work culture where everyone bad mouths everyone else; constant fear of layoffs

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Jacksonville, FL

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

Pros*Convenient location
*Company will pay for you to get various certifications related to your role (and insurance in general)
*Decent benefits
*Wear jeans on Fridays

Cons*Constant threat of layoffs/replacement by consultants always looms
*Though a lot of this is hearsay, the general consensus is this company doesn't pay nearly as well as most others in the area for similar work.
*A huge number of people are incredibly nasty and condescending; not to your face, but it's almost like high school with the gossipy insults.
*401K isn't vested, at all, until 3 years on job.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to pinch pennies when times are good. This is applicable to personnel decisions, raises, projects, etc. but many of the gripes tie back to the overall frugality.

Management uses you till a better horse comes along

Agent (Current Employee)
Rainbow City, AL

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time for more than a year

ProsThe agents who worked in my office were always very supportive. Fronting managers are great as well. While the pay is low, there is a floor. It's not total commission

ConsIf a customer lapses business written years ago, you get chargeback whether you were paid commission or not. Hard work doesn't guarantee success. You also provide your own gas

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't ask questions if you don't want answers. Contract needs to be restructured. Encourage and expect the best from your sales force but realize people say no
