I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Solid learning experience. I am able to work on interesting projects and grow a lot. The work environmnet is very flexible and allows for family time as needed. 19 days vacation for those with less than 5 years of experience, which bumps to 24 days afterwards.

    Cons

Pay is not bad, but not particularly competitive. Management seems disconnected between the various business segments. Shrinking business.
Lots of pushback on expenses, even getting small events funded can be a challenge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let loose the purse strings. Culture seems a bit rigid.

I worked at Kemper Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere. No real micro-management. Can work at your own pace. Good flexibility if time off is needed.

    Cons

Poor financial performance and many layoffs. Morale in office is very low. No attempt by management to bring morale to a higher level. Low morale = poor performance. Pay is not competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quite a bit of money is wasted on frivolous expenses, such as individual plastic desk ornaments. Morale needs to be brought up and employees need to feel appreciated. Kemper used to pride itself as "Employer of Choice". That definitely is not its current status.

I worked at Kemper Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The floor staff were great folks. I miss the relationships I built there over the years. Used to be a good environment to learn different areas and move around.

    Cons

Multiple layoffs and outsourcing have decimated morale beyond recovery. All upper management are new, i.e. less than three years there; the older ones bailed. Company is running too lean to promote from within, and veteran staff continue to leave in droves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out where Kemper is going with respect to competitors. Find a real vision that the company can buy in to. Show that you value your Domestic employees by reversing their replacement with poor quality off-shore resources (but it's probably too late to recover any trust now.)

I worked at Kemper Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Always looking to increase your knowledge. I was taking an excel class that was a great experience. I looked forward to applying to new classes and it was encouraged

    Cons

Kemper was downsizing and I and several others were laid off in 2013. I was in the middle of taking an excel class and I didn't get to finish. Very disappointing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More divisional training. Most classes were done on a PC with several hundred employees attending. A Lot of questions with took up a lot of time.

I have been working at Kemper Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    *Convenient location
*Company will pay for you to get various certifications related to your role (and insurance in general)
    *Decent benefits
    *Wear jeans on Fridays

    Cons

*Constant threat of layoffs/replacement by consultants always looms
*Though a lot of this is hearsay, the general consensus is this company doesn't pay nearly as well as most others in the area for similar work.
*A huge number of people are incredibly nasty and condescending; not to your face, but it's almost like high school with the gossipy insults.
*401K isn't vested, at all, until 3 years on job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to pinch pennies when times are good. This is applicable to personnel decisions, raises, projects, etc. but many of the gripes tie back to the overall frugality.
