Review Highlights

Cons
  • Working for a plant manager who is more interested in corprate image and not real operation of the one plant (in 4 reviews)

I worked at Kennametal full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There were many talented people who worked at the location I was at. Most of them were very skilled and friendly.

    Cons

Employees were under-value and under-utilized. The culture is more like a dictatorship and collaboration does not happen very often. In my experience, management gave alot of lip-service to it's values but had no follow-through. Many times upper management's actions did not support the positive messages they tried to portray.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that to maintain valuable people, you need to re-vamp how you view your employees. The top companies will offer many venues for personal and professional development and truly listen to their people for insights.

    I worked at Kennametal

    Pros

Good benefits package though you have to pay for it

    Cons

There is no loyalty to long-time employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that the people you hire make the company what it is. If you treat them well, your company will thrive.

I worked at Kennametal full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Pays some of the bills.

    Cons

Minimal pay increase once a year and that only covers the increase in insurance costs. Nothing extra for your pocket. NOT family friendly at all. You are just a seat filler to the company. Nothing more. They do not care about the individuals. Lower level mgmt is horrible. If you ever move you you have to check your conscience at the door. No room for compassion. There are better companies out there. This one better get with the times quickly. Must learn how to allow employees to balance work/family. Don't be sick either. No sick time and you get charged and "event" for missing work. Even with a doctor's note. Too many cons to name.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the "little" people. Reward those that work hard. Make family a priority. Pay better.

I have been working at Kennametal

    Pros

Its good for people who are into manufacturing and mechanical domains but not IT especially at the beginning of your career

    Cons

Low pay, stunted growth, poor management team especially the IT wing at KSSPL bangalore

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be respectful and frank with employees and dont try to be cheap just to cut costs. Cost cutting and cheapness are two entirely different things also please appreciate pwoplw when they do a good job rather than saying its their duties and its no big deal

I have been working at Kennametal

    Pros

I have a job to pay the bills

    Cons

treated unfair on a daily basis, their is no such thing as senority, they try to get things done by threats unfair acts, God only now how they come up with how they chose the recently selected "groupy leaders" thats just a few

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Revamp the entire leadman, so called supervisors, and group leaders to old hands who have the experience and people skills and actually care about people and product quality. This place is going down very fast, if the job market where better you would lose over 50% of employes overnight.

I have been working at Kennametal

    Pros

Getting a pay check every 2 weeks, good health insurance, thanks to our union, good benefits, thanks to our union

    Cons

Very little communication from Latrobe to us, poor communication from the plant manager - does not want to settle grievances, so everything is going to arbitration.2 years ago you enjoyed working there, now it's just the opposite. The plant manager is very controlling and it's either his way or the highway. He signed a contract with the union and does not honor it. He instituted Lean, which is not working the way it's supposed to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start getting involved with the people and find out how it's really being run, and not just a flyby, really get involved with everyone

I worked at Kennametal full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Location. Good brand value for company. Good and friendly environment. Competitive pay and perks.

    Cons

People are egoistic and sometimes non co-operative. People place self interest ahead of company interest. Especially in shop floor, management has failed to bring in efficient work culture and average age of employees is too high for a manufacturing company. People try to stop others from doing good work. Mantainance of machines is worst.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plz bring new technologies and machines. Machine accuracies and repeatability are too bad.

I have been working at Kennametal full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits and are family oriented for the most part . There are many great people who work here.Very safe enviroment.

    Cons

Departments are very separated from one another. There is a strong disconnect between management and personnel. This leads to poor operating procedures and ultimately low morale. Enviroment can be very stressful due to inefficient processes.
Career development and advancement is extremely poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead by example. Recognize the talent you have and utilize it to be advantageous for both the company AND that employee. Consructive criticism and employee feedback are belittled and ignored.

I worked at Kennametal full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the best companies to start your career.Good Pay for new recruits.Resonably a good work Environment.Greater stress on Safety. No work pressure ( but not good for the organisation ).

    Cons

Unprofessionally managed Does not have a clear career plan for any level in the heirarcy. You can find 'MANAGER's every where who are more interested to "manage"than to work hands on.Has one of the worst performance evaluation process and you score if you are "good" with your manager. One's career growth is entirely depended on how well you are connected to Top Management in Bangalore or Latrobe. Some get promoted every six months while some may not get promoted even after 6 years- depending on how close you are with those who matter in the .A person with good "connections" can get paid handsomely even without lifting a finger for years.Engineers and Managers who have been long associated with the company are treated like "scrapt".The Matrix reporting has ensured that most of the managers does not have any accountability. The condition of the employees is even worst. The salary of a new Graduate Engineer is more than the salary of an employee who would have put in more than 20 yrs of service. One can expect a decent career development only if you are in Sales.DEFINTELY NOT A COMPANY WHERE ONE CAN PLAN A LONG CAREER.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes to the ROT which has creeped in.Stop just listening to your immediate subordinates ,Try to talk to your subordinate's subordinate.Decentralise decision making.Stop evaluating people on how well they can speak in English or how well they can make a ppt or how well you "personally" know that person.First and formost start showing respect to those who have stayed on with the company even through the tough times.Stop evaluating the performance based only on the "METRICS"-which no way helps in survival or growth of the Organsiation. Finally start giving due importance to those who are not in Sales .

    Cons

    Not good work/life balance.
    Priorities change almost every day.
The preformance review process is a joke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some excellent people working for you. Need to value input from the subject matter expert... believe and trust them. You should personally thank your reportees at least once a month. Be sencere. Not scheduled, just on the fly.
