Exciting and frustrating at the same time to be working for a company that is in the midst of changing culture.

I have been working at Kennametal full-time

    Pros

Great Home to Work Life Balance. Opportunities for flex-time, and understanding of Family First atmosphere. Have seen opportunities for advancement in a few departments. They seem to be moving into the direction of Customer First, but it's not there yet.

    Cons

Too many "middle managers" messages does not get translated from the top to the bottom. The term "lost in translation" is common here. As with most large companies, doing what you say you do is harder to see, at least on a "worker" level. This is a finance run company. At the end of the day that trumps everything!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be so worried to let people grow and make mistakes. There's too much CYA going on in Management to protect the manager, and not not enough, managing.

    Pros

    Good benefits and resonable pay.

    Cons

    Not good work/life balance.

The preformance review process is a joke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some excellent people working for you. Need to value input from the subject matter expert... believe and trust them. You should personally thank your reportees at least once a month. Be sencere. Not scheduled, just on the fly.

I worked at Kennametal full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The pay scale is good, benefits package is pretty much standard throughout the industry. Working conditions are better than most that I have worked in.

    Cons

The lack of respect from management in the Roanoke Rapids facility is what ultimately lead to me leaving. It was not simply the plant manager, it was the fact that most management is more focused on pushing product out of the back door that they ignore machine conditions. They deceive employees to farther end goals. Walk around the plant at any point in time and you can count 13 machines not running, at a minimum. Mostly, this is blamed on maintenance, the reality is it's mismanagement. If mismanagement is not the problem, then there is something going on that management is not willing to admit to. Either way, it showed me that the "Mutual Respect" policy they have just doesn't apply from the top down. That fact became too taxing for me to continue working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Critical thought would demand that we examine "what is your purpose?" If you really want to be on the top of the market, the people making the parts must have high moral and clear focus that they are on the top of your priorities. If not, then it's just another job, just like any other employer. The pay may be better, but if there is no appreciation for the hours worked (other than the pay and a lousy meal from time to time) what is the motivation to keep morale high? Last year, for our Christmas gift thing, they gave everyone a small can of peanuts. Really? Peanuts? What does that say?
If your focus is to just make money, then I'm sure you'll do fine. You'll gain business and loose business, just like any other company. If you want to keep business and gain more business, than the guys (and girls) on the floor have to be satisfied that they are worth more than the part. They can't just be fed a constant diet of be.

    Pros

Family culture and genuinely nice people. Diverse customer base = lots of interesting opportunities. Latrobe HQ campus is beautiful. Walk the walk with work/life balance.

    Cons

Intra-company communication needs significant improvement. Systems exist but are not utilized - most information travels by water cooler conversation. Older company in terms of demographics; not the most tech-savvy or open to new ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The vision is there, but make sure you know what your employees do on a day-to-day basis. Lots of non-value-added activities eat up time, preventing the achievement of the "next level" you're seeking.
