    Great place to work!!

I have been working at Kettering University

    Pros

We have a lot of freedom and flexibility. If we didn't, it would not be a great place to work. Most of us work very hard so it's nice to be able to have the flexibility. I believe the absentee rate would be very high leaving others to pick up slack - not a good thing which would result in resentment. Love the students!!

    Cons

Although our raises have been very minimal, I credit them to our current leader. These minimal raises are better than nothing. We went 8 years without even a thank you. In a few other depts, some employees get away with doing nothing all day every day and are not held accountable for anything. Their own bosses fear them.

I have been working at Kettering University as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Freedom to include your own course content and style. Excellent co-workers. Dedicated students, all with interesting diverse backgrounds. Little organizational structure.

    Cons

Little supervision and standards. Almost no coordination between different course offerings. Few opportunities for collaboration even when taking own initiative. City of Flint, Michigan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend a little time with professors, both in classroom and helping with the bureaucracy.

I worked at Kettering University as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Got to use lab instrumentation regularly and extensively. Was not micro-managed while researching. Great overall experience and great place to gain lab experience.

    Cons

Well, it's Flint... Also, it's a bit like grad school in that I would go and work late at night, but that is the nature of research!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help students get other jobs our move on when the time comes to do so.

I worked at Kettering University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

As the former GMI the school is in the top ten for engineering and known world wide. The benefit package is great. Allotted time off is another perk.

    Cons

Wages are poor and way below national average for position. Too much micromanaging by upper management. Those who work and dedicate themselves to the institute are not rewarded. Very poor communication and leadership. Those who don't work to their potential are not disciplined. No follow though with upper management with issues or concerns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow managers to manage and have upper management concentrate on increasing enrollment. instead upper management goes over the department manager's head without their knowledge and re direct their department duties or projects.

I worked at Kettering University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Small campus - you get to know everyone just like family, including the students. Some of the perks are great, such as the rec center - and having access to use it

    Cons

Just like family - there's usually a bad seed. Low pay, very little advancement. New administration is making changes frequently and creating a very unsettled work environment. Location - Flint, MI.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be nicer to loyal employees when realigning and outsourcing their jobs.

I have been working at Kettering University full-time

    Pros

I worked in IT at Kettering University and obtained valuable work experience. Kettering University offers competitive benefits including: 403(b), discounted health insurance, paid time off, sick time, 1.5 weeks off for the Christmas holiday, tuition assistance (up to $5,250), free parking and free recreation center access.

    Cons

Kettering University has not given or offered its employees a raise in over 8 years. Kettering University which was formerly General Motors Institute is struggling to establish its brand. Therefore, low student enrollment and retention is a pitfall for the University. Even with great individual performance don't expect to get a bonus or a raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hopefully President Dr. McMahan can help move Kettering University forward.
