Pros
Different work - Jobs are different
Insurance - It is all the same
401k program is top notch - contribute 6% of salary, company will match it, then give a 4% bonus at end of year
Cons
Moving every 3-9 months
Pay is not what is seems - Work 70 hours a week and figure out your houly wage then...
Supervisors are only looking out for themselves
double standard managers, turn there head on some issues, then will not on others
Disregard to policy, not transparent across region
Advice to Senior Management
You are supposed to train your replacement not belittle them. Don't feel threatened by a 1 or 2 year guy when your are a 10 year guy. And don't crush their career. Appreciate the small things and rewards the accomplishments of a job well done.
Pros
I feel I have some semblance of job security. It may not be doing what I want, where I want but it's a paycheck.
The pay is decent and the benefits are very good.
They challenge you to do good work, but it's also their way or the highway.
Cons
Like everybody on this site says, there is really no 'Work/Life Balance'. Management says they want you to have it. But it goes out the window when it comes to the job site.
Raises are a JOKE. Really? Twenty bucks a week more? Wow, how generous.
And unless you are top management, don't expect a bonus. Kiewit received a bonus of $8 million on a project for finishing early. Did they even give a token amount to all the people working 18 hour days to make it happen? Nope.
Other people here have mentioned 'Kiewit Culture'. More like a cult, really.
The company controls the work force through fear and intimidation.
Kiewit says that safety, quality and business & environmental compliance are the most important. However, those are some of the lowest paid positions and are rarely eligible for the company stock program. Yeah, they're important...important to the company's bottom line.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen, share the wealth, show some appreciation, don't take advantage of the faltering economy to not pay your people what they're worth and just because someone doesn't 'live the Kiewit Culture' does not mean their not an asset.
Pros
Great Benefits, Great employees, love holidays
Cons
Redoing work that doesn't need to be done
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to lower staff members
Pros
safety is good, clean job to work on.
Cons
Ask the hourly what they think a little more????
Advice to Senior Management
Get out there and get dirty some times then you dont look like your better then us... and not all about the paper work. If its your job we dont mean one day month either.
Pros
Gain lots of experience and work on really neat projects. If you want to learn good management skills Kiewit is a great company to get you foot in the door.
Cons
Expectations involve many hours, weekends, relocating. You are on-call. This could mean working days, mids, nights. Working 12-16 hours days are the norm
Pros
Very challenging work.
Good potential for career advancement.
Good benefits.
Great experience.
Great people.
Cons
Absolutely no work/life balance. It absolutlely does not exist.
Pay is not great, especially if you consider it in hourly terms.
No outside, technical training offered, all Kieiwit culture orientated and is very repetitive.
Advice to Senior Management
Do not exhaust your workers, high turnaround is very costly for the company.
Pros
Outstanding opportunities based on your abilities. Hard work is expected and rewarded. Moving is required, but that it not a secret. The company builds large project and employees must go where the work is.
Cons
The hours and moving can be viewed as a con, but the expectations are very clear when people are interviewed. This should not be a surprise to anyone, but the long term compensation more than makes up for it.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to reward the high performers and remove those who don't. Compensation should be based on actual performance, not just experience.
Pros
dynamic work environment
always something to do
excellent benefits package
private office
latest technology
extensive resources at my disposal
good health incentives including the wellness program
Cons
no balance between work and personal life
long hours, for the pay
expected to do the work of 5 people in limited time frames.
expected to work until it's done, even if that means working for thirty-six or forty-eight hours straight
minimal acknowledgement of sacrifices made.
Advice to Senior Management
Establish a better system so I can more easily manage work and personal life. Eliminate the need for me to work crazy 36 hour shifts. Or at the very least, pay more! :)
Pros
Capable co workers who are willing to help you grow professionally. The projects are interesting and ranges from small grading jobs to hospitals
Cons
The hours and location are sometimes an inconvenience because you have to be flexible about where you. Better pay is always good.
Advice to Senior Management
Produce a medium for the staff to voice their opinions and concerns about the company. The company as a whole is good to work for.
Pros
-unlimited resources
-growing company
-great benefits
-training opportunities
-knowledgeable management
Cons
-move a lot from job to job
-long hours, no work/family life balance
-bonuses for upper management only
Advice to Senior Management
-communicating more realistic expectations to new hires and graduates (letting them know about the moving and long hours).
-better merit raises
