I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They spent a huge amount on lunches and entertaining guest.

    Cons

Lack of leadership in management roles. Racism is openly displayed in the Company's history. The Lenexa office is run like a Mom and Pops operation. Ole Boy's last stand!

    Advice to Management

Get out of the business and allow employees with experience to move up in the Company.

All about face time, can be incompetent, uneducated and produce subpar work as long as you are at work 70+ hours/week

Current Employee - General Superintendent in Woodcliff Lake, NJ

    Pros

Benefits, Some younger employees, company truck

    Cons

"Good ole boy" company. Face time is more important than quality of work performed. Top heavy, too many chiefs that lack technical skills work younger employees to death. Younger employees work circles around their supervisors who are completely out of touch and lack the technical skills to get the job done but are good at telling stories and talking their way out of sticky situations so they work just hard enough not to get fired. Older employees compensate their lack of aptitude for their position and skills by living at the office and pretending they are always busy when in reality they don't do anything but sit around and BS about the glory days when they did everything with paper and pencil and how successful the past projects they were on were.

    Advice to Management

Lay off old workers, pay young employees half of what you were paying the older slackers which would be double what you currently paying the younger employees. Stop promoting a 1950s work culture of face time and reward younger employees for performance/quality of their work. Need to adapt to new generation of workers by allowing flexible work schedules (for office staff) that are not managing crews daily (i.e. telecommuting, weekends off, payment of overtime-labor laws are likely being violated if you look at compensation vs. hours worked - Mcdonalds employees end up making more than a Superintendent with a Masters degree on some Kiewit projects that were bid way too low.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Certainly a big name with a long history,,,,that's about it.

    Cons

They own you, you will work long hours (salary) bassically they are leveraging the salary position against you...How, simple they expect it of every body, you don't put Kiewit before your family, self and breathing, your culled. Kiewit is an absolute abusive place to work, they have had many years to perfect their abusive form of business...Run from this place would be my advice if you value a life.

    Advice to Management

Tell the truth, quit playing the Kiewit game of abuse and and promises ie carrots that are lies, everyone ar Kiewit has a giant carrot hanging in front of them that isn't real. Quit doing that!!!

I worked at Kiewit Corporation (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent health benefits, few companies offer cheaper plans. That's it.

    Cons

The 401k match is nice but you need to be there 5 years to be vested. The stock program is a joke, only people who have been there 20+ years really make any money and the value has fallen off dramatically in the last 4 years. Once you get stock, you no longer get the 401k match. The stock program is basically a giant pyramid scheme, new stockholders barely get any. The culture is driven by fear, disagree with someone connected and you will be fired. The salary is 20% lower than most companies out there, which really hurts when you realize you're going to be working 60+ hour weeks. Figure out your hourly pay rate and you'll wonder why you're doing this. Entry level degreed Mechanical Engineers will average $17/hr. I could goon but just read some of the other reviews, they're pretty accurate. Some people have a wonderful experience working for Kiewit. However, most don't.

    Advice to Management

They wouldn't listen anyway, they think they're the big boys of the construction world. If Bechtel and Fluor ever go under, they might be.

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was getting night shift differential, working 6/10 crushing the game making a killing, work wasn't bad, (not hard not easy) sometimes you would have to fight to stay woke

    Cons

Cove point was 1 1/2 to get to, everyone's all high and mighty on safety until the work starts, they let heavy equipment operators run the whole damn place

    Advice to Management

    Grow a pair

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company wins alot of contracts with clients. Diverse portfolio of work in different locations. Company offers a 'field premium' when assigned to a project.

    Cons

Long hours. 12 hrs/day was expected without justification. By the way kiewit, you have to pay OT to your employees. Employee pay is far below industry standard.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be an industry leader, treat your people fair. Fair wages, integrity, and honest hiring practice.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Having Kiewit on your resume will be great for your subsequent job search as for whatever reason, they are a somewhat respected company. If you get exposed to a lot of different aspects of construction (usually due to your peers or supervisor being incompetent or lazy in doing their own work) you can learn a lot. Benefits are reasonable. If you're young, single, and willing to have little work-life balance, and want to travel / move often, Kiewit might be a good option for you! Their twice reviews don't seem to be connected to raises. You can get a high rating, but that doesn't always translate into getting a raise. Expect about 1% per year if at all. Some OK team building events, but that eats into the Life portion of your Work/Life balance.

    Cons

They will promise the world and put up with unfulfilled promises for a few years before moving onto something bigger and better. If you want to remain in one location, don't waste your time applying. There is no consideration for an employee's life or family when it comes to company needs. If they decide you're moving somewhere, either you're going, or you're walking out the door. Expect to work 50-70hrs depending on your project/location/supervisor. If you're not from Omaha, or haven't become close friends of a higher up from Omaha, you will be overlooked for promotions to roles you're more than qualified to do which will be filled by someone from the good-old-boy network that's fresh out of school. Numerous people with titles well above their ability. If you're a project engineer at Kiewit, you would likely be a PM or Sr PM at another company. If you're title is Project Exec, chances are you're only really a Sr Proj. Engineer. Basically, the titles are wacky and often don't reflect the workers abilities. Forget about being invited to BUY stock until you've been there and paid your dues for 5 years. Pay is low. You'll be surrounded by some smart people. However, the smart ones are unlikely to stick around once they figure out how things work in Kiewit. The pay can likely seem good, but not once you factor in the amount of hours you will have to put in.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to attract and retain talent. Get rid of the lazy people sucking your overhead. Cut down on the unnecessary district meeting flying employees around the county racking up overhead.
