I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Available training, challenging work, competitive pay, stock option, many locations to move to, great 401k plan.

    Cons

No work-life balance, normally work 55 - 80 hours a week. Management is very heavy on favoritism. Very little holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want all employees to feel engaged and "own" the company, give non-stock holder bonuses. Different district received different COLA is not a good standard.

    I worked at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

Great benefits, good pay, multiple different opportunities within. Ability to work in multiple locations in US and Canada along with Australia. Most get 3 weeks PTO to begin, changes to 5 weeks after 3 years and can be rolled over into a maximum of 400 hrs of PTO.

    Cons

Very internally political company. Essentially those that work with Kiewit and are successful often don't have much of a personal life outside of the company. Those that get promoted often do so because they work every hour of every day and/or have an in with someone with upper management. Unless you are very close to your upper manager it is very difficult to get a promotion or decent raise as the hierarchy of the company is so skewed that you need a manager to not just give you a positive review but to essentially go out of their way to get you a promotion. Other major con is with career changes or moves within the company it is often not communicated until it happens, without discussion. If you don't like the opportunity it is essentially career suicide with them as they will hold it over you moving forward, even if it was a lateral opportunity you turned down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more involved with reviews and honest about future career planning.

    Poor Corporate Policies, Great People

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people here at Kiewit are one of a kind. They are all hard-working and fun loving. The team experience is truly unique.

Great opportunities for advancement, if you are willing to put in the hours (60/week) then you will move up the ranks quickly.

    Cons

The amount of transfers and short notice doesn't give you a sense of stability. Everyone is usually running around, not in a very organized structure.

The opportunities with advancement don't come with a pay increase. While you might be willing to do what it takes to get the job done well, don't expect to be compensated for it anytime soon. The policies on promotions are skewed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would suggest revising your policies on compensation, it will cost more in the long-run to replace employees that quit.

    I worked at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

The work was a lot of fun. It was like playing with a giant Lego set most of the time. You get to design your own formwork, plan and work all directly with the crews. If you wanna go the field route into a superintendent you can or go the project engineer or project manager side you can. They send you to Omaha a lot for continued training and your always learning. If you willing to take everything with open arms you can move quick. They give you lots of responsibility and expect you to learn and ask questions.

    Cons

Lots of moving. Hours are long but that's construction.

    Pros

Great training program, large scale projects, great employee relationships, great benefits, experience looks good on a resume.

    Cons

Work you to death, travel a lot and only let you go home if you're married or have children, communication is horrendous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can get to be part of some of the biggest, most challenging projects in the country. Often you can be given a lot of responsibility as a new-hire.

    Cons

Most districts of the company are known for hard-working salaried employees and long hours are expected. Not much time for work/life balance, unless you make work your life. Lots of policies and procedures (and paperwork) that goes above and beyond most contractors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Relative to it's 130+ year history, Kiewit's business seems to be increasingly reliant on subcontractors, so if you are unlucky you will be managing subcontractors and can get in a rut where you are unable to prove yourself in self-perform operations. Don't pigeon-hole employees in positions with no chance of advancement.
