I have been working at Kiewit Offshore full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Field Supervision has a wealth of knowledge to learn from and are excellent mentors to staff engineers.
Project Management challenges team to improve and take on new tasks. Also good mentors.
    Training is available and encouraged.
Never boring - Always something new and exciting ahead.

    Cons

Company has problems with staff retention because of the demand to work unreasonable hours without compensation.
Company preaches work/life balance but doesn't walk the talk.
Hard to move up in the ranks unless you rub elbows with the right people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to look for talent in less obvious places. Just because an employee is not aggressive and constantly trying to impress the boss doesn't mean that person doesn't have unique value to contribute to the company.

Former Employee - FCAW, Structural Fitter and Hydro Tester in Ingleside, TX

I worked at Kiewit Offshore full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great places to get experience. Good benefits. A lot of overtime.During my time there I did a lil of everything started as a tacker with FCAW in 3G, 4G & 6GR. Promoted to welder crossed to structural fitter. As a structural fitter learned a lot about rigging. Crossed to piping, while piping learned iso's, P&IDs conducted hydro's.

    Cons

Getting into the yard sucks. The pay isn't the best. Also if your not a suck up to some foremen you won't get anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to choose there foremen better. A lot of them are idiots have poor vocabulary with workers, have no education or knowledge of the industry

    Pros

Benefits, rewarding work, lots of overtime, good teams and support. Overall I had a very positive experience working for Kiewit.

    Cons

Traffic getting to work in Ingleside was a pain. The access to the yard was so little that I would sometimes spend an hour in a traffic jam before work began.

Good place to learn how to not behave as a professional

Don't do it if you have a choice

Good ole boy network; which is fine unless you can't stand those morons. Then it makes work a little more difficult.

Safety is a bad word at KOS so if you get stuck there keep your head down and try not to get killed

make any sort of plans in advance.
-home life ceased to exist unless your spouse works for Kiewit too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of seniority getting the raises and "move-ups", you should move up and higher pay the men and women who know what they are doing and who work hard and are punctual.
