I worked at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Really great people to work with. Lots of opportunity to get involved in groups--i.e. young professionals, women professionals, etc. Opportunities to succeed if driven to.

    Cons

They talk a lot about work-life balance, but it's very difficult to do here, especially if you have children. Expect to work very long hours. They also seem to want very dominant-type personalities working here, not so much introverted types.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Leadership is promoted through everyone as each individual is building their own client base, promoting the career growth of younger partners, and professionally practicing engineering/planning/landscape architecture/or their respective profession. The firm supports practitioners to build clients/projects while satisfying the core values of the firm.

    Cons

The sky's the limit on entrepreneurialism - the fun of the career here can be addicting - you need to keep this in check for balanced personal/work proportioning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain the model of transition and recognition - it's extremely rewarding, promoting, and secure - all the elements needed for a healthy career.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The true value of the company is found in all the benefits outside of salary, such as bonuses, insurance, profit sharing, and a sharing office culture. The more you contribute, the more you receive. Most are given the freedom and encouragement to explore new and better ways to further their career and the success and profits of the firm.

    Cons

The culture and environment make work-life balance a challenge. The flat organization is not good for someone who places great importance on titles. The consensus building process to make decisions can be slow and frustrating.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Support to building a practice and career is strong and without boundaries; excellent benefits; top professionals at all levels. On the job training is an everyday occurrence.

    Cons

Integration when coming in from another firm and learning the unstructured culture can be tough to believe initially. (It is that unstructured and open.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Remain practice led.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The talent level of the staff is unmatched. Regardless of discipline or which team you are part of there are smart people ready and willing to partner together to handle whatever comes along. One of the biggest strengths is that fact that every discussion starts by considering what is right for client. The company works hard to be sure that opportunity and compensation are available to all the staff.

This is a really good business, run by people who are always thinking ahead and planning for what is around the next bend.

    Cons

First it is consulting. It's not for wimps. Perhaps not a negative but an important distinction - employees have to be willing to grow themselves. No company can do that for you. Team members will be challenged professionally, but they have to be supportive of peers in the process. Expectations are high, because the clients have high expectations for successful projects. There are lots of ways to measure success and achievement against goals at Kimley-Horn. To be successful you have to learn how those goals relate to each other and understand they are intentionally balanced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to communicate decisions transparently. Continue the company's history of being owned by practicing professionals and sharing profits with all of the employees. Continue to teach the company's culture to incoming employees.

    Pros

This is an extremely intentional firm, with the express purpose of creating an environment for entrepreneurial professionals to thrive.

    Cons

There is a high bar set to succeed here. Professionals have to work on-purpose, and strive for their team to provide a high level of client service every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

High-level of talent and expertise, entrepreneurial atmosphere, highly compensated for outstanding efforts, family atmosphere, team atmosphere. Possibilities are endless, opportunity for all.

    Cons

Kimley-Horn is not for everyone, you have to have desire and passion for what you do and want to work hard to achieve great things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to monitor and address the "work / life" balance. Promote a "healthy lifestyle".

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Kimley-Horn provides outstanding opportunities to grow professionally. Employees are given the support, encouragement and resources to be great consultants and trusted advisors to their clients, not just engineers, planners or designers. Because of these opportunities for professional growth, as well as outstanding benefits and a commitment to sharing the firm's financial success with all employees, Kimley-Horn is able to recruit and retain amazing employees. This includes new college hires all they way to seasoned practice builders.

    Cons

The planning and design business is tough in general, and Kimley-Horn has high expectations of its staff to provide outstanding client service and to grow in their careers. This requires extra effort, and is not for everyone.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Kimley-Horn is a challenging and rewarding environment. If you like challenge, you'll love it. They provide many opportunities and promote a results-oriented environment. I've found more positives than negatives.

    Cons

It isn't perfect but what firm is. I do believe they try to do the right thing, but sometimes they miss the mark.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The personal sacrifice for relocating on the firm's request is extremely high. There is not a full understanding on how it negatively impacts your career financially and on your upward movement on the professional ladder.

I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

We work hard but are rewarded very well. Great people to work with. Communication on the financial success of the firm it an open book. Strong year end bonuses. Even during the lean years when other firms were shutting down, our staff still received bonuses. GENEROUS 401K plan. To me, this is a long term commitment. You could call me a Kimley-Horn cheerleader!

    Cons

On the business ladder, promotions are very slow in coming. Much slower than on the engineering side of the company. I know this is an engineering firm and those are the people that pay our bills, but recognizing folks in HR, IS, Marketing, and Accounting is equally as important. Long term employees in these areas provide a depth of client service that is important to practice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regional leadership teams function differently from region to region. Some are more involved in every day to day decision while others reach out to partners to make decisions. They are regional leaders not regional managers.
