I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Average pay and benefits.
Normally a 40 hour work week.

    Cons

There are three ways to achieve a high paying position.
    • Friend or family of upper management (i.e. director level or above).
    • Native of Bolivia (subcategory of family and friends).
    • Former Shell employee.

This is not an exaggeration, the amount of nepotism and cronyism is unbelievable! If HR actually implemented a policy preventing relatives from working and even supervising each other 2/3 of the staff would be eliminated. This would stop all productivity as a few people do all the work for the friends and family network as qualifications are not a requirement for employment.

This is the cheapest upstream oil and gas company in the country. Saving money is normally a good thing; however they will spend a dollar to save a dime. Standard policy is to pay an extra $1,800 on a company truck to have the power windows and door locks removed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR needs to put a stop to hiring personnel solely based on their relation to upper management; it is driving the few remaining qualified employees away. They’re racing the legacy El Paso employees out the front door.

Start a real safety program to replace the vague policies that don’t make sense and are inconsistent between locations. Everyone must be clean shaven but no employees have ever been given a respirator fit test. A good start would be putting a qualified person in charge (i.e. someone with a background and education in EHS).

Employees are your biggest asset. Invest in some training.

Look at turnover rates by department, manager and supervisor. There are instances that exceed 300%. This is well known with employees and it would be nice to see action taken.

Do something with the information from all of the employee surveys; currently it just goes into a black hole. Everyone has the same issues but nothing ever changes.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Reasonable hours for reasonable pay.

    Cons

Ten year old +200,000 mile trucks to match their 10 year old computers and antique software.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career progression based upon qualifications as opposed to the buddy system would likely result in less turnover.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Safety culture, competitive pay, great benefits package, reasonable hours, plenty of advancement opportunities. Great experience that can be used in a variety of fields, lots of different avenues to use the skills learned within the company.

    Cons

A lot of work outdoors, can be very hot/cold depending on the season. Without careful attention to the work there is potential for accidents

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time in the field to better understand the day to day operations and be able to communicate goals in a more practical manner

Unsafe and Unethical in SE Region - From a former Terminals Safety Professional

I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Unfortunately, I cannot think of one Pro.

    Cons

Sr. Management wants low injury rates, but has not idea what it takes. Rather than develop solid programs and a cooperative culture, the COO has implemented a culture of fear and discipline around safety. Employees and management fear reporting....now you have your low numbers. Unfortunately, the low numbers are gained via unethical methods. Regional Manages lie to try to get information and influence. Everything is done on a shoe string budget, therefore improvement is nearly impossible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do some research on what it takes to create a positive safety and work culture. Ensure top leadership sets the right business tone. Get the COO out. After leaving, I met multiple people in the safety field who knew about KM and knew to stay away. KM is gaining a very negative image
