I have been working at Knowledge Universe full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Being a part of a company that serves children and families is an awesome feeling. Company is on track for a great turn-around! bringing us back to not only leading in the size of our company but being an industry leader.
Good work-life balance, good benefits, good people to work with.

    Cons

Being in the service industry, some employees feel the company shouldn't run as a business, but a social service agency. We must be profitable to sustain us as a company. Unfortunately, it means some layoffs. It doesn't mean that "they" don't care. It's good business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep making the right decisions that you are making. It's getting better and better!

I have been working at Knowledge Universe full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The company is now focused onemployee engagement. The corporate realizes that they cannot make sustainable profit without an engaged team in the field.

    Cons

pay for the industry is low, but KU is comparable to other child care companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward consistent high occupancy and top performers financially. Bonus based on year over year growth favors low performers who turn things around rather than long term consistent top performers.

    Pros

Employee centered, growth potential, company committed to the care and well being of each child and family as well as the employees that keep the wheels turning.

    Cons

Early education requires dedication and commitment to children, famiies, and employees; thus it can take a toll on the work life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to be in the solutions and resolutions business. Always look to steps ahead to what can be improved, how employees can be appreciated, to avoid morale issues.

I have been working at Knowledge Universe full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

KU is a fun place to work and has good benefits. The child care discount cant be beat for working moms with young children. the curriculum allows some flexibility if you are good at planning and time management.

    Cons

Sometimes have to work with inexperienced young staff that are there for a paycheck only. Your hours can vary and sometimes you don't get 40 a week

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We should have better trainings that challenge us to learn new things. The trainings are the same every year and very boring.

I have been working at Knowledge Universe as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

I love coming into work every morning and I have a great and helpful team to work with. There are many transportation options for the Portland area. I am given every tool I need to do my job and management has treated me with respect. This place has the potential to be a fun and stable environment. Early education is till valued by the public and it won't go away any time soon. That doesn't mean that a company like this is immune to self-destruction.

    Cons

I had an extremely unpleasant experience with a miscommunication that made me believe that I was to be let go. That made me more aware of how tenuous employment is during this time of extreme flux. The atmosphere of mistrust and conspiracy has the potential to be a deadly form of toxin in a business sense. Things are still in limbo and seems to never move toward a stable pattern of predictability and the mechanisms are not fully in place in all departments for employees to navigate the performance-review/promotion/hiring process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The drama among female personnel is unsurprising, but sadly prevalent. I would advise HR to make some attempt to curb/assuage these unprofessional behaviors. This may require soliciting specific types of feedback. Do not be politically correct here. Rather, be open and truthful. If toxic behavior is coddled, as I perceive it to be, it will wreak havoc. Also: Please be Transparent and Honest about employment outlook/expectations and career paths. If employees are left in limbo, they will flee when given the opportunity.
