    Pros

Teachers are invested in their profession and the children they teach.

    Cons

System now all about national test scores and not true learning.

    Advice to Management

Back to basics and forget about test scores.

    Pros

Teaching, helping,& making a difference in others lives. Holidays, snow days, sick days

    Cons

Low pay, more work than pay, lots of long days, work at home after work, lots of paper work, stress, multi tasking, under appreciation, no gratitude,

    Advice to Management

    Management depends on school

    Pros

Many of the principals and students are a joy to work with. Especially in the smaller community schools. Pay is ok for the area. Benefits on par.

    Cons

Some principals only care about career advancement. Central office doesn't seem to take teachers into account when making any decisions.

    Advice to Management

Listen. Many of the changes, cuts, funding, and definitely testing conflict with student and teacher interests. Stop playing favorites and reward the many wonderful employees throughout the system.

    Pros

-As of NOV 2014 differential pay schools (33 specified counties) have increased sub pay from $68/day to $94/day T-TH and $125/day M and F -Good days can be easy (only three high school block classes and one plan period which means only 5hrs of work) -Flexible work schedule -Can cancel last minute -Interesting to see all different schools -Variety -If you want to get plugged into a school, subbing is an excellent way to get your foot in the door -Paid more than full time TA's -Rewarding work

    Cons

-No benefits -Only allowed to work 15 days/ month -Bad days can mean dealing with wild and disrespectful students, can be high stress... Many students come from rough home lives and this is reflected in their attitude and behavior

    Pros

Make your own schedule, increased pay for "trouble" schools (hard to fill vacancies), good support system and resources

    Cons

Difficult to get the schools you want, limited to 30 hours per week

    Advice to Management

It would have been nice to hand a little more training as far as classroom protocol, but I understand each school is different (as are the teachers) and many substitutes are recurring employees

  7. Plenty of available jobs, but not always an easy job.

    Pros

There are some great teachers that will work with you in Knox County. There is great flexibility in subbing. There are always lots of jobs to take.

    Cons

No two classrooms are the same. The administration in Knox County has begun limiting substitutes to part time status due to the Affordable Care Act. Those who live closer to certain schools are almost privileged because subbing at those schools will earn you more per day, which doesn't seem fair.

    Advice to Management

Offer higher rates for subbing across the board and advertise for substitute jobs if you want to fill all the positions at schools.

  8. Not bad working environment, but very low wages with no real voice over decisions made about the schools.

    Pros

Consistent pay plenty of time off.

    Cons

Not very much income and they expect stellar results. You are not given enough time to meet all expectations. The general attitude of teachers and staff is we are given instructions which changes every year and these instructions are given with no real thought about how it will effect the students or staff.

    Advice to Management

Have people make a decision that has actually taught in a public school within the last 5 years. If you taught in the 90's or earlier you have no clue of what you are deciding.

    Pros

Large system so there are more opportunities

    Cons

Every decision they make is based on public appearance, not what is right or best for the students

    Pros

It is rewarding and challenging. You are able to be creative in presentation of materials being taught to students in most cases. The connections made with students and peers are carried with you and built upon year after year.

    Cons

It can be challenging but in a good way. Some days are can be questionable if you are making a difference. You just have to focus on the big picture.

    Advice to Management

Keep the support going to the Teachers, staff, etc. Continue the conferences which uplifts and gives positive solutions in this trying time for which we are a part of.

    Pros

Work-life balance, time-off, and the joy of knowing that you are helping students receive an education.

    Cons

Too much micro-managing, dumb policies, and the expectation to teach a certain way knowing that students will be tested in a different way.

    Advice to Management

Look at some of the idiotic policies that downtown has related to teaching. Also, look at the teacher through their whole career just based on one year with one test.
