Pros
Employees are able to combine up to 3 coupons in addition to their employee discount of 15% off.
It's a really simple job. Anyone who can surf the internet can figure out the touch screen cash register.
There is a Kohls everywhere.
Cons
I can't believe there is no incentive plan! I've worked at other retailers that paid a quarterly commission of $15 per approved credit card sold, and $1 per new/verified email address (customer had to acknowledge the welcome email and confirm signup). Kohls doesn't have any kind of incentive program at all. They just push and push and push you to get 2 credit cards and 11 emails per shift. If you are lucky, they will be playing "bingo" that day and if you meet all your goals you will get a snickers bar. Really?? If I bring in 2 credit cards, 11 new emails, receive a written customer compliment and receive a written employee compliment I can get a 75 cent candy bar?
The POS position pays minimum wage. Even though I've listed myself as available any time (all days of the week and open-close) I only get 11-17 hours per week.
The shifts are never the same, so I can never plan any fun outings with my friends because every shift is at some random time.
The schedules are generally posted only 4-7 days in advance. again making it hard to have a life outside of work. They generally post 2 weeks worth of schedule at a time, but during the holidays they have just been posting the next weeks schedule on the preceding Wednesdays.
They have a day-off black out in November and December. You are not allowed to take any days off at all.
Everyone is required to work Black Friday and Christmas Eve.
You cannot have employees from other area Kohls cover your shifts. even if they are trained in the same area. This makes the pool of people that you can trade shifts with very small. With the schedules coming out so late and no one to swap shifts with, you are pretty much stuck working at Kohls whim. Conversely, if you want hours you only have a limited pool of people to pickup shifts from.
The training material is all about "yes we can" and making the customer happy. Management is all about keeping up the sales numbers. There are highly conflicted messages about whether or not we should allow customers to use coupons if they forgot them. Every manager or 2-7 seems to have a different policy.
Advice to Senior Management
Implement a sales incentive program. If you want to pay people minimum wage, that's fine. Get them motivated by increasing their earning power through credit and email sales.
Implement some consistency in scheduling.
When you have a captive audience in huge lines, why don't you have a person going up and down the rows selling credit cards and handing out email signup slips? People could then take these to the registers when it's their turn and be ready to go. Having to sell credit and email on those ultra-busy days is a disservice to customers. What they want is for the line to move - not to be pitched a credit card, an email product, and a survey.
Pros
Nice Associates and Area Supervisors, willing to help. Hired as Seasonal and the expectations were communicated appropriately. Negotiated a hiring starting hourly pay-with much persistence on my part-I guess they really wanted me! I understand the push for Credit Cards and E-mails, that other's have complained about. These are both HUGE revenues producers for a Company and they want to keep their share holders happy.
Cons
Initial orientation was done well. Computer Based Training-too much to do in one sitting-rather boring and repetitive-after many years in retail, a group setting with interaction is much more effective and makes for a better learning experience.
POS system extremely cumbersome and initial training is insufficient-especially for PT Temp holiday hires who are expected to jump in and essentially learn the system and procedures on their own. I kind of felt feed to the wolves...
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up a POSITIVE presence on the floor, all hands on deck when it is busy. Food does not buy happiness...kudo's and PERSONAL recognition do. Your Holiday Hires at POS are going to make an impression on the customers and don't need to see and wait for associates who are literally learning as they go-while trying to keep the lines moving. Make Holiday Hires feel part of the team-your associates do.
Pros
Kohl's is a great place to work because they truly put the customer first which in turn helps the employee understand how to handle the many customer service issues thrown our way. It is always a "Yes we can!" attitude and I really like that.
Also, it is a fun way for me to practice my merchandising skills.
Cons
I hate to complain about the wages, but even after being their for about 5 years and being full time I am not really making a livable wage. It is a shame, because I really do enjoy working for Kohl's but it is hard not to keep your options open to new opportunities.
Kohl's of course is a retail store, and with retail comes the mundane tasks of cleaning fitting rooms and dealing with not so pleasant customers, this is a given at any store.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership is very strong at Kohl's, I think some ways to improve would be to focus on the associates as much as you focus on the customer. By focusing on the associate I mean taking their wages, hours, and overall working experience into mind. I think it would then be a great balance, I understand this can be a difficult thing to do especially with the amount of employees that work at Kohl's, but is not impossible.
Pros
Kohl's has a wide range of positions that work for people with varied schedules. Hours are extremely flexible. Affordable insurance plans available even to part time associates.
Cons
Job can be relatively stressufl.
Advice to Senior Management
More communication among management.
Pros
Associate discount. Especially if you have a kohls charge it's like getting double discounts
Benefits even for part timers.
Most of the employees and customers are friendly
Cons
To many coupons. Customers are very spoiled when it comes to coupons and take advantage of ones that are one per customer.
Stop pushing us with getting credit and emails. Somebody like me who gets a lot in the first place should not have to be told to push it. Not a lot of people want to open another credit card.
If we miss one of the steps of GREAT we get talked to. I usually do all the steps but once I forgot about the survey and was told that I forgot to tell the customer about the survey. Seriously?
Give us more hours! Period! Why should one POS associate get 28 hours and another get 13 in the same week if they are not in school, have another job or anything. Makes no sense.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop the email coupons. People are abusing them.
