I worked at Korn Ferry full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

the associates employed with Korn/Ferry are world-class folks: sharp, focused, intelligent, experienced, and open. because of it's global reach and the caliber of its clients, Korn/Ferry offers some truly worldwide opportunities for making contacts and gaining exposure to international markets and cultures.

    Cons

because Korn/Ferry is predominately a consulting firm, its approach to managing all lines of business come from this mentality. this can be counterproductive to the shared services departments that don't fit into the "bill for every 15-min chunk of time."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to those employees who are not consultants or principals, but who are greasing the gears of the machine that the sales force are furiously turning. just because your hundred-thousand dollar car looks gorgeous on the outside, it is no use to you if the engine breaks down every time you take it out for a spin.

Former Contractor - Marketing in Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Korn Ferry as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay; since marketing dept is small, there's opportunity to participate in several projects; hours weren't too demanding so work-life balance was attainable.

    Cons

No clear structure in place for career advancement; "old boys club" mentality; stagnant corporate culture; not a very creative/innovative environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When people first join the department, contracted or permanent, take the time to set up a measurable career-plan so that growth can be measured from both ends. And don't just stop there - the plan should be reviewed throughout the year to make sure that goals and responsibilities are being met and that the employee/managers are still on the same page regarding their career path with the firm -- and not another survey, but an open discussion. The more invested colleagues feel in their role within the firm/dept, the more likely they are to stay motivated and excited about the firm/department and its objectives.

    Pros

You can spend a lot of money for NOTHING

    Cons

It's all just a dog and pony show. Smaller search frims offer better service, results and much better pricing

I have been working at Korn Ferry full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great brand, great people, satisfying work. A differentiated platform that integrates excellent assessment tools in the search process.

    Cons

Bean counters run the firm without taking a long term view about how to retain the most talented people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember big billers aren't always the best leaders. Use information technology to improve efficiency and quality, not only as a marketing tool. Stop investing in low margin leadership consulting. Excess cash sitting on the balance sheet does not create shareholder value.
