I have been working at Kraft Foods full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is solid -- work-life balance can be achieved in most functions. Good culture and people.

    Cons

Career progression not always as fast as most expect. Beaurocracy & red tape aplenty. Poltical savvy sometimes more important for advancement than excellent work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Big changes coming in terms of salary grades and career progression, so hopefully upcoming changes will help. Very focused on young, ethnic talent.

I worked at Kraft Foods full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There use to be a lot of pros.... good company, great products, good leadership, benefits and pay! It very much felt like a family, especially when we were under GF and Phillip Morris. At the beginning, I loved working there.

    Cons

Unfortunately, tons of restructuring over these last few years has taken away all the pros. It was sad to see so many good friends and co-workers lose their jobs or forced to move with the company split (Mondelez) . Products are no longer relevant and too processed for today's heath-conscious consumer. It's always about productivity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pushing out the older/experienced employees and stop hiring and promoting so much talent from the outside, ex P&G employees will not save the company. There needs to be a good mixture for long term sustainable growth and knowledge continuity. And as previously mentioned, Kraft is very much a "horse and pony" show. Lot's of people talking, but very few doing anything.

Lots to learn, but fit will make/break you

I have been working at Kraft Foods full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Kraft is an awesome place to learn a more general management style of brand management. Cross-functional talent is above average, resources are generally pretty good compared to many companies. Compensation is great and if you're on the better end of the talent spectrum, you'll be rewarded handsomely.

Success requires a strong general management skill set first, consumer skill set second. Unless you're going into communications long term - this is going to set you up for the best long term future. There is still a lot of investment happening in brands, so there is plenty of opportunity to do the sexy stuff too.

The definition of people who are a "good fit" for Kraft is somewhat narrow - if you are type A with above average intelligence, have executive presence and are action oriented, you'll succeed.

    Cons

If you don't fit or are challenged with analytics, Kraft will chew you up and spit you out pretty quickly as an ABM.

There is diminishing respect for work-life balance - which used to be more tolerable when bonuses were good. Bonuses for many folks have been bad the past few years and it isn't looking good for this year either. Makes the long hours less appealing.

After some improvements in removing unnecessary process, it's (process) now coming back stronger than ever before. People are starting to die on the vine from the process.

I'm not sure the company is headed in the right direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the preparation for project Gemini, a lot of resources and people were cut. However the work was really never prioritized or cut (enough). Now significant process (IBP and IDEA) is being added. People are burning out.

Decide what this company is and resource/prioritize appropriately.

I have been working at Kraft Foods full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people driven to excel. Company is recognized as a leader in quality food products. They offer good health care, on-site gym and wellness programs, beautiful campus.

    Cons

Open space office design is not conducive to concentrating and getting work done. It is great for collaboration and connecting. Meeting intensive environment - would benefit from meeting agendas and focus on purpose/deliverables to cut back on meetings for sake of meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recommend upper management walk the talk in terms of work/life flexibility. Working remotely is still frowned upon and management is a bit old school. More transparency on company objectives and team-building - if we all know the direction upper management wants to go - we can work together to get there faster.

I worked at Kraft Foods as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

You are working with some of the best brands in the industry, so resources are less of an issue. In addition, everyone around you is an expert at something, so often you don't have to reinvent the wheel but instead consult someone who has done your project before or has intimate knowledge of it.

    Cons

You are never allowed to unplug... You are contacted throughout the day and often have meetings that take up your entire day and are forced to perform actual work on what is supposed to be your time. In addition, managers and peers will often reach out during the evening for work that needs to be performed by the next day. There is a feeling that you are "on call" at all times and because everyone is working so hard and is intelligent, it is hard to justify those who actually get promoted vs. those who don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people so that the people you currently have don't get burnt out.

I worked at Kraft Foods as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The best thing a job at Kraft offers is a really well known name on your resume to progress with in the future at other employers. The pace of work is generally pretty balanced and manageable. Nice side benefit of a company store with discounted food products.

    Cons

I found it hard to make meaningful connections, breach the bureaucracy, or move up in my career. The typical age of employees here seems a little higher than average, so as a younger person beginning your career it may be harder to be taken seriously here than in other companies or industries.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer better career development and promotional opportunities for younger employees
