Unique opportunities in a great place.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kwajalein Range Services full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThere are tons of opportunities to grow, and most management reward hard work. Projects are rewarding, and the benefits are good. While the base pay not seem that great, factoring in the tax free pay, free housing, and if unaccompanied the free meals makes saving money very easy.

ConsFacilities are starting to deteriorate on the island. Departments are having to do more with less. The medical services are limited in what they can provide.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees' concerns, and think about the long-term future of the company. Upper management has the perception to a lot of employees of being more focused on themselves and their parent companies (Bechtel and Lockheed Martin) than KRS and it's employees.

KRS is a good employer with good benefits.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Huntsville, AL

I have been working at Kwajalein Range Services full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat 401k plan and abundant vacation time. Easy-going attitudes and helpful co-workers.

ConsThere is obvious preferential treatment for some employees who have been with KRS longer than others. Working in a distributed environment between Huntsville and Kwajalein has decreased productivity and communication and increased the financial burden to the company, the government, and the range customer.

Advice to Senior ManagementTime to review the contributions of all employees, especially those who have held their positions for a very long time, and either make adjustments to their salary or insist on showing positive performance results.

Almost Paradise

Communications Technician III (Former Employee)

I worked at Kwajalein Range Services full-time for more than a year

Pros-It's a great place to save money as your housing and food (if unaccompanied) is provided for you. You are also eligible for tax-fee income.
-It's on a tropical island.
-Three weeks paid vacation.
-It's a great place for SCUBA diving, sailing, deep-sea fishing or just soaking up the sun.
-It has a "laid back" work environment. Even management wear tie-dye T-shirts on Friday.
-Hey, did I mention it's out on a tropical island?

Cons-Since I had mentioned that it's on a tropical island, it is very remote- about 2100miles SW of Honolulu. Traveling on and off the Island is rather difficult (and expensive), unless you go on your annual leave.
-Infrastructure is minimal: There is no cable service (only six over the air channels), no high speed internet in your residence, filtered internet and land line phone service.
-The people there can be very clique-ish and shallow, which I haven't witnessed since high school.
-You are working on a military installation; even though there are more civilians than uniformed personnel, you still have to play by the Army rules.
-"Kwaj Kids"- the current employees who grew up on the Island as children- have a sense of entitlement. They tend to treat non "Kwaj Kids" like crap.
-Certain employees who have worked there for "eons" have a developed a "Kingdom Mentallity"- which impedes with getting things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet with the times. Limit personnel to how long that they can work on the island at one time. Provide more inclusion to personnel who don't do cliques. Need better management- clean house.

Get the money going in

IT Systems Security Specialist (Former Employee)

I worked at Kwajalein Range Services

ProsWonderful lifestyle. The Marshall islands are a great place to live if you scuba dive or like to fish
It reminded me of living in a college campus...except everyone has money! Food & board are provided
There are lots of activities to partake in, free movie theatre, arts & crafts like pottery & batik instruction. Many people scuba dive 200 times a year in 82 degree water with 100 foot visability. Diving on WWII wrecks like the Prinz Euegen (Sister ship to the Bismark), wrecked Japaneese zeros, it's simply amazing.

ConsIf you're promoted they limit your growth to 10% per year including COLA. They were hiring people in making more money than I was.
Married people with famlies on the island are treated way better than the singles
Food is marginal in quality and variation.
The defense budget has been cut several times, often ending up with cuts in the lifestyle. Pools are closing, fourth of July fireworks cancelled, food budget cut. Talk of reduced work hours

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair. Stop penny pinching on the workers while lavishing on senior management. Stop changing policies without notice, causing people heartache and money. Treat the singles better. The way the Marshallese are treated should be criminal, but you see to it that it's fine in the compact with the royalty...shame on you.

lower compensation than other places but provide great flexibility to pursue your goals outside of work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kwajalein Range Services

Prosflexiblity. A great company to work for if you are interested in pursuing an advanced degree and obtain work experience.

Conscompensation is not great and work is not necessarily very challenging. It can be a challenge to look for interesting work.

Advice to Senior Managementthe senior managers are not employed by the same company but they should be. It sends a wrong message when the senior managers refuse to accept the compensation that KRS provides.

Island time

Systems Engineer II (Former Employee)
Ebeye (Marshall Islands)

I worked at Kwajalein Range Services full-time for more than a year

ProsLocation, location, location. Beaches are amazing, plenty of things to keep you busy. Be sure to take advantage of where you're at.

ConsClicky. Can get boring after a while. Pay is low but you save a lot. The 'housing' people are a completely seperate group than the 'apartment' (BQ) people. The former ensure it stays that way.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on keeping on. Mngmt more interested in golfing and protecting their own interests than employees.

Interesting opportunities outside the office.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kwajalein Range Services

ProsMost jobs for Kwajalein Range Services (KRS) are located on Kwajalein Island in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It is a beautiful area in a very remote part of the world. If you like watersport activities, this is the place for you. Scuba diving, sailing, fishing, surfing, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, SUPing... if it's done in the water, most likely someone out here already does it.

If you're single, room and board are covered by the company, but you live in the Bachelor Quarters (think dorm room). If you're married (or have accompanied status) you get a house provided by the company but you're on your own for food.

As a contractor, most people are tax exempt due to it being Foreign Earned Income. There is a very small percentage that goes to the RMI government, but it is well under anything you would find in the US. An average total tax liability is around 12% but that includes US Social Security and Medicare taxes.

ConsAs the US Army budget gets cut, funding for Kwajalein gets smaller and smaller. This, understandably, has caused a lot of stress on island. Decisions on budget items seem to be announced at the very last minute which gives people who may be laid off at most 90 days to find a new job before they're shipped back to the US. With the dwindling budget, range assets are rusting in place. Lots of areas on island are in dire need of repairs and upgrades, but there is no money in the budget to actually accomplish that.

The public internet connection on island (in houses and BQ's) is still dial-up. Yes, you read that right; good old fashioned 56kbps modems. They keep saying "high speed internet is coming" and they appear to be working on it but the actual date for roll-out on island keeps getting pushed back further and further.

The social aspects on island are... interesting, to say the least. The gender disparity on island is extremely evident, being much more heavily weighted towards men. Average age on island (not including children) is probably somewhere in the late 30's early 40's if not a bit older. Alcohol consumption on island is high, and the "college mentality" persists even for people well out of their college years.

Advice to Senior ManagementI realize you're handicapped by the US Army and MIT/LL, however having no long-term goal for the company does not instill confidence in the average worker on island. Lot's of things could be improved: communication, leadership, negotiating skills, etc.

When dealing with the Army or MIT, you need to show more backbone in supporting your own employees rather than letting them dictate the future of the Range.
