I worked at LAPD full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting job with great benefits and good pay.

    Cons

Do not expect to be able to able to freely think outside the box. You will be expected to adhere to strict protocols, some of which are a bit antiquated. Technology within this field is changing very rapidly, and while the newer employees appear to embrace this change, management tends to resist it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If this lab had a small group of scientists dedicated specifically to research and validation of new, cutting-edge protocols, I think this could easily become one of the top crime labs in the country.

I have been working at LAPD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are the best than in amy other company.

    Cons

Management is the worst. Morale is at its all time low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually supervise. Reward those who go above and beyond and do the leg work for it. Reprimand those who cannot complete the simplest of tasks instead of just transferring them to make them someone else's problem.

I learned a lot and had some great mentors. The work itself was not very exciting most time.

    Pros

The people who worked here are very nice during my time there I had pretty flexible hours, so that was really nice for me.

    Cons

Sometimes boring paperwork had to be completed by yourself when everyone was doing other things, but other than that, it was fine.

I have been working at LAPD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

LAPD offers many different assignments and areas, and overall is a great organization to work for. For the most part, you are able to do what you want (as far as what type of police work you enjoy) whether it is gangs, traffic, motors, flying helicopters, narcotics, vice, recruiting, swat, etc.

    Cons

The worst part is that the Chief answers to the mayor, and personal agendas of the mayor can get in the way. Also, it would be nice if we promoted people based on merit and not as much on demographics.

Overall, the job had good benefits because of all the unhealthy work conditions and practices they expose you to. Hard.

I worked at LAPD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, as far as health, educational reimbursement, or training that was related to your job title. Open 24 hours, so any shift was available. Met some very nice co-workers.

    Cons

invasion of privacy, rules, regulations, mental overload, treacherous supervisors

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create rules that don't force your employees to choose between their family and friends, or being employed. Develop policy that doesn't invade another's personal privacy, if it is not affecting their job or job performance directly.

Rewarding and fun but management, not the criminal element, is detrimental to officer's health.

I worked at LAPD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Pay and benefits.
    - Interaction with diverse cultures and people.
    - THE DANGER!!! WHAT A RUSH!!!
    - Satisfaction of helping others.
    - Every day is different even if your assignment is not.

    Cons

    - Politics !!!!
    - 3/12 shifts can be brutal. Especially if you live outside of city limits and commute to work.
    - Management "eats it's own". Job security not a sure thing; especially if you don't kiss ass.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rank and file officers and non-management civilians are people too and people make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes are due to ignorance or a simple "mistake of the heart".
Management should investigate and where warranted TEACH the employee and give them a second chance instead of seeking immediate termination and in some cases prosecution.

I worked at LAPD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the best cops you'll ever meet work in the city of Los Angeles. The possible career directions are endless and the job can be a lot of fun if you are cut out for it.

    Cons

This is an organization that has chewed up and spit out a lot of people. It is on one hand a very professional organization, with high standards for its officers, and that's fine. On the other hand, it is run by management that operates based on the mind over matter principle. As in "we don't mind, because you don't matter." The lack of standards for how management behaves with in their dealings with officers is an issue that comes up frequently. The union helps, but conflict still occurs. This adds to a naturally stressful work situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating police officers like crap. It doesn't do anyone any good. Management needs to expect more of themselves than of their subordinates, not give themselves more latitude.
