    Pros

Loving, caring, collaborative staff dedicated to enriching children's lives

    Cons

-Horrible management -Run like a company rather than a school -Enormous amount of pressure on teachers -A behavior management system that does not meet the needs of students (responsive classroom) -CEO's focus is on quantity of schools rather than quality i.e. continues to build schools when the current schools do not have adequate resources, like libraries, cafeterias and playgrounds

    Advice to Management

Close down. The Chicago community would be better without you.

    Pros

Growing Charter School with plenty of new and changing areas as growth occurs. Individual can expand into several roles including Finance, Real Estare and Technology.

    Cons

To work here you must be young, energetic and have no social life because your future at Learn will depend on it. If you have competing priorities, you may want to search elsewhere.

    Pros

-Some teachers really enjoy collaborating. -There is an instructional coach available.

    Cons

-Student behavior is bad. -Responsive Classroom is the expected behavior management technique, but these kids need incentives and stronger consequences to make a change in their behavior. -No curriculum that teachers are expected to follow strictly. -Teacher morale is very low. Most teachers want to leave because it is such a taxing job.

    Advice to Management

-Teachers are expected to work way more than is reasonable. We need more planning time if we're expected to be as fantastic as we are pushed to be.

I worked at LEARN Charter School full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Guided release & small group emphasis in reading and math.

    Cons

Low pay, longer hours, not appreciated by management, too many people in the classroom (23-28 kids and two teachers), kids play teachers against each other, not enough planning time, 70% of year end evaluation is based on student test scores, principals pay their friends whatever they want regardless of how good test scores are, resident teachers get paid in the mid to upper 30's, teachers get paid in the low to mid forties, the CEO Greg White makes $325,000.

    Advice to Management

You get what you pay for. Stop hiring newbie teachers like TFA for low pay that don't match the demographics of your student population. Have more diversity in your hiring process for lead teachers. Teach culture studies relavant to the student population in reading/social studies. Have fewer kids in one physical space (more rooms, 10:1 student teacher ratio). Ax the assistant teacher thing. Evaluate principals better (there's a reason that the school is a revolving door for teachers).

    Pros

It's a great place to get your feet wet and get experience in teaching.

    Cons

Bad kids, ridiculous hours (60+), lots of reinventing the wheel, unrealistic expectations of teachers, lofty visionaries for leaders

    Advice to Management

Stop reinventing the wheel. Have teachers share resources like lesson plans. Create an intranet for shared resources.
