Never 2 Days The Same

Travel Operations Manager (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at LHR Airports

ProsThe tagline 'If it can happen, it probably will' probably sum's up working at Heathrow well. It's a unique environment where anything can and will happen, every day is a different day and there is just no way of knowing what to expect. An exciting and ever changing environment with huge operational demands and massive demand for infrastructure that just is't big enough to cope, means that as a manager you are constantly challenged and developing yourself and skills. Managers are empowered to make decisions at all levels of the organisations when it comes to protecting the operation, great sense of team work especially when the going get's tough.

ConsHaving a clear career path can be difficult, with union agreements and the so forth, jobs are purely advertised and candidates successful on the strength of CV's and interviews, current and previous performance is not factored in which can be disheartening for those who do a fantastic job and are capable but are just not good at the interview stage. Constant re-orginsations and changes in leadership often impacts the understanding of what the current direction is.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry and get some stability in the senior team's, don't be afraid to challenge the union's and do the right thing

The next generation (yet to arrive) will make BAA a great place to be

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at LHR Airports

ProsExciting sector with something new every day.

ConsIn a process of selling airports which means you work at an airport and not for the BAA group. Not good or bad, just be clear about which you want to do if you are thinking of joining.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect the good job people do.

the management trust you to be able to do what you think is the right thing/way to do something

Technical Architect (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at LHR Airports

ProsFor me it was the oppurtunity I was looking for to advance my skills and start a new life in the big city.
Now that I'm here I'd say that for me the management trust you to be able to do what you think is the right thing/way to do something, and allow time for R&D and personal development (as long as the budget allows of course!)

ConsThe whole pace of anything new being implemented or changing moves at the speed of a sloth on downers. Everything is tied to paperwork and 15 forms of sign off and approval.
The threat of being outsourced is on the mind alot here, along with it thought of losing one of the last "final salary" pensions left in private sector.
The negativity in the press about the company makes it hard not to feel like you're working for one "of the bad guys"

Advice to Senior ManagementRecently short sighted / arse covering decisons have led to some major screw ups, this is not the way forward
