    Good, but not stable

    Senior Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsReasonable workload. Good live and work balance.

ConsFrequent layoff. Uncertainty arises from time to time.

Advice to Senior ManagementStability is a must.

Acceptable place to hang out when you don't want too much pressure at work.

    Design Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

    ProsGood work life balance,
Good group of work colleagues, usually a fun lunch crowd to hang out with.
Option to work from home when the office gets too depressing.
Generally good benefits, reasonable pay, bonus, ESPP.
Direct management and up are mostly competent and not too demanding.

ConsCorporate HQ in San Jose is really bad. Don't be fooled by the nice looking facade, you will be placed in a 6x6 box to work like a battery chicken. So many people in a small space, not enough parking or bathrooms for the number of people, expect 5 minute walk from overflow parking lots and sometimes 10 minute wait to get an empty stall. Feels really depressing to go in to that tiny cell on a Monday morning.

Each first quarter you will be told to take a mandatory 1 week vacation because it suits the company financials. This is a terrible way to treat a professional workforce, why would we want to take a third of vacation time in the middle of winter! I think this was the final nail in the coffin for my time at LSI.

No new interesting projects to work on. Expect endless update cycles of old products.

LSi will soon cease to exist as it is being acquired by Avago, unfortunately Avago is one of the few companies with a lower Glassdoor rating than LSI, so not much expectation that things would improve under new management.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake decisions more quickly on starting new projects. Try to keep engineers engaged with interesting work.
Get more office space and give a more reasonable work space to the engineers. People are leaving because of this.
Stop the mandatory vacation in the first quarter nonsense.

It was good experience overall but the company lacked a clear vision for their Storage group

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsGood work environment
    Lot of learning opportunities

ConsLack of vision from the higher management

Great work until the music stops and you don't have a chair

Principal DSP Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsCostumers are the top in the industry

ConsNarrow set of customers make company susceptible to wimps of customers.
Median employee age is high since they haven't hired squat since the layoffs (when company was Agere) started 10 years ago.
All layoffs look like age discrimination but aren't as nearly everybody is over 40.
Talent or age are not an issue with layoffs, it's just about (lack of) money.

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire when Avago buys the company. The industry can survive without you.
Stop buying back stock (it hasn't helped)
Make investments in new directions (much like you did with Storage but elsewhere).

    Major rifts between sites

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsGained valuable skills while working at LSI. However, they came at a cost.

ConsThe work life balance is talked about, but never really something that existed. There always seemed to be major politics involved in projects with one site in particular thinking the owned everything and thinking the other engineers at the other site were just not up to par.

Advice to Senior Managementfigure out how to build a better mousetrap instead of bowing down to the stock analyst.

Didn't care about the storage industry

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Wichita, KS

    ProsGood people to work with.

ConsSenior leadership uses constant hiring and layoffs for budget problems. Everyone gets to do more work with less people.

A challenging-rewarding experience, but needs major improvements.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Norcross, GA

ProsI enjoyed working with knowledgeable personnel in a small group. The technology is amazing and constantly evolving at a rapid pace.

ConsA lot of restructuring involved every quarter. A solid plan needs to be developed and follow through to help employees have a better peace of mind. Also, teams are placed in different states and countries which can cause a lot of misunderstanding at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management needs to get more involved with their employees and have team building events.

Possibly among the best companies to work for..!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf you have got a never ending appetite for learning, this is the place you should be at. Has some of the great minds working for the company.

Great compensation, benefits, facilities for the employees.

    Work-from-home.

    Cheap conveyance.

Room for lot of recreational activities.

A research enthusiast company, encourages employees towards inventions/innovation, patent filing etc.

ConsRecruits and designates some of the freshers as contractors, thus excluding them from all the above mentioned pros.

Intern/Trainee to Employee conversion rate is pretty low since it is more of a "Depends on Reqs" based scheme than a performance based.

Advice to Senior ManagementCould really work on the mentioned cons.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
