I worked at La Clinica de La Raza part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great community, working with dedicated professionals in the community health setting.

    Cons

Working in the community health setting can be challenging due to lack of resources and time at any clinic.

I have been working at La Clinica de La Raza full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most staff sincerely wish to help people, and tens of thousands of people are helped each year. The school-based clinics are especially awesome.

    Cons

Resistance to change is too pervasive, and those advocating for changes (whether out of necessity or as an attempt to make improvements) are too often silenced. Some staff and processes are permitted to continue as is, despite significant failures or flaws (for example, the HR department is understaffed, out of touch with staff, technologically outdated). There are few if any repercussions for bad management. Pay is too low, especially given money spent on unnecessary projects.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to all staff, rather than just the opinions of a few. Be more open to change.

I have been working at La Clinica de La Raza full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Love the population being served.

    Cons

Management is not attuned with worker's needs. Morale is low which affects productivity of the agency and increases turnover. Management is ineffective in responding to low productivity thus driving the workers' morale even lower. Workers complain about long hours and inability to manage a healthy work life balance.

I have been working at La Clinica de La Raza full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Community-based organization, hires and helps the community, full scope of health care services (medical, dental, vision, behavioral health) for those who most need it, welcomes anyone, dedicated to health care for all, including people without legal documents, strong support for professional development (80 hours of education leave per year)

    Cons

Non-profit salaries, sometimes unwilling to look at blind spots or hold people accountable, uneven customer service, long wait times in some clinics, could benefit from more funding to accelerate improvements

I worked at La Clinica de La Raza full-time

    Pros

The organization has a wonderful mission and there are some amazing people who work here that are very passionate about delivering the mission and helping the community

    Cons

The organization is too kind and lenient on employees that are unproductive, inefficient, childish and wasteful. Unfortunately, some of these unproductive people are in management.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to let go of people if they are not adding any productive value to the organization.

    Pros

Staff are very supportive one one another. People work here to serve the community.

    Cons

Salaries stay frozen. Upper management is disconnected from front-line staff. Focus on productivity and less on staff enjoyment/well-being.

    Pros

You get a sense of satisfaction knowing you are helping the community through your work.

    Cons

The location in Oakland is dangerous and traffic rules (letting pedestrians the right of way for example) not always apply. Moving up in the agency is based on cliques. If you don't like to play politics at work, you should not expect raises or advancing in your career based on merit alone.

    Advice to Management

Make the agency a meritocracy and give employees frequent evaluations too. This way laziness and indifference towards work can be avoided as well. Train front-desk staff to be more professional on the phone and in person when dealing with patients.

  11. Lots of good people, good work, and employee training. Mixed experience depending on where you work

    Pros

Flexibility in terms of multiple departments and locations if you have the kind of job needed around the organization. Lots of training opportunities, especially for the managers. Some departments have a strong family or community feeling. I think many managers try hard to do the right thing. Commitment to the community, employee wellness program, pretty good benefits, some buildings nice to work in.

    Cons

Non profit pay scale. Can be super gossipy depending on the department. Management seems to have a hard time firing people who should be fired. Not always an emotionally healthy place too work. It depends a lot on your manager and how mature your co-workers are.

    Advice to Management

Let us know what's going on more often. Hold managers accountable to support staff. Get rid of people who aren't helping our patients or are being respectful to patients or co-workers. Provide more employee training, vacation time and extended sick leave.
