Pros
In these economic times, it's important to remember that there are a lot of volunteer organizations which offer valuable services and need our time and talents. Transitioning into a 2nd career in health care was made easier by experience in this organization.
Cons
Of course the compensation is minimal, but the contacts made are well worth your time. Support and reference materials provided are excellent.
Advice to Senior Management
I think leadership is remaining true to the ideals of the original founders. The conferences are fantastic and informative. Well done.
Pros
A small, cozy working atmosphere. You could keep your head down and nobody would bother you for the most part as long as you did your job. I liked feeling as though I was making a difference in people's lives.
Cons
"Small" and "cozy" could mean not enough room to breathe for some folks. As with most small companies there was a great deal of cattiness between employees--everybody could be up in your business if you didn't keep your mouth shut. The management? HA! To be kind, I'll just say they wouldn't know their behinds from a hole in the ground. They treated the employees that didn't kiss their fannies poorly. Staff questions were nearly never answered. There was always some form of double talk mainly because they didn't KNOW what the answer was. The degree of ignorance and absolute "I know what's best," attitude from management was astonishing. It has gone as far as to completely lose sight of what the organization was based on--alienating people who have been with the organization since 1956!
Advice to Senior Management
STOP! You're taking an organization that has worked for 53 years and are running it into the ground. Take a look around you. Remember why you're there and how the mission of this organization is to offer help.
