I worked at Lack's Stores
Pros – I enjoyed the other sales associates who had mostly worked there a LOOONNNG time and who were a bunch of interesting characters. And, I liked the customers who were also a varied lot. And Lacks generally treated the customers nicely. The furniture was mostly good value.
It had a distinct personality and had health insurance for sales associates.
Cons – I felt bad about trying to sell worthless addons to poor people and to get them in credit hock for months. The store makes much more money on the credit than the furniture. There was some bullying involved in pushing people to make quotas. It could be an uneasy place to work. However the manager did try to help if people had family sick or whatever.
In bad business times the sales associates can be going broke and end up owing the company money. There was a ton of behind-the-scenes work involved to get orders actually delivered (and you don't get paid till delivery is complete).
Advice to Senior Management – Melvin & Janey Lack are sort of a pain and can really hold a grudge. Not fun to have them in the store. But, they too are part of the store's distinctive personality and it is interesting how the Lacks appear personally in ads and stuff.
