Environmental Intern (Current Employee) Alpena, MI

ProsGreat culture- everyone is very personable. Safety is top priority. Great opportunities to grow within the company. The company takes good care of its employees.

ConsWages are salaried which can be frustrating when working more than 40 hours every week. It is just something to take into consideration when offered a job there.

    They're falling apart

    Operations (Former Employee)

ProsLafarge offered good benefits like a company vehicle, insurance, and pay was OK. Formerly dominated the building materials market.

ConsYou only get training if you're deemed high potential. Bad relationships amongst co-workers. A lot of management is not transparent. Talk a good game, but don't follow through. If you work your butt off it may not matter.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more upfront about what's happening. You're not breeding a good work enthronement.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexibility within role. Plenty of challenges. You are not a number to management, very good about development and training.

ConsIncreased workload through the economic changes, wearing many hats.

The cement industry is in tough times, Lafarge payscale shows it.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYour objectives and bonus are set for you by management.

ConsThe industry is in bad shape and what used to be higher paid positions are now well below the norm. They can't keep squeezing forever. The talent loss will become great in the next few years.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe cement industry is not for most people in general. At the plant level it is very hard work and not in the best of environments, hot, dusty, dirty, long hours. The compensation used to be there but not now.

Interned at the research center in France over the summer, friendly environment, but work was a little boring.

Chemical Analysis and Measurements Intern (Current Employee)

ProsPretty decent benefits are given to employees. The food at the cafeteria was really cheap and good.

ConsThey don't speak English very well

    Great Company!

    Director Technical Services (Former Employee)

ProsVery supportive of employee development. Huge career opportunities for people that do not mind relocation every 3 years, and are willing to consider international assignments.

ConsOrganization sometimes experiences analysis paralysis, and mico-management.

Advice to Senior ManagementExecutive management dont be afraid to empower your midlevel and front line managers to direct themselves and make decisions. Lafarge has great values and great people with world class development and education. Trust them.

Used to be a great organization until

    Executive (Former Employee)

ProsUsed to offer amazing international assignments and potential for career advancement. It is still an opportunity as soon as the market picks back up.

ConsCEO (BL) is only focused on managing financials for the current quarter. There is absolutely no vision for the future and strategy is sacrificed to get back the credit rating that was lost. The last 4 years here were only focused on cash savings, cash savings, cash savings...

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can focus on the future while not forgetting the current objectives (many companies do it every day)

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
