I have been working at Laing O'Rourke full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

being part of the drive for embracing technology and innovation. Wonderful management team. Companies financial "health" and future. Positive work culture and co-workers

    Cons

My view of the company and the experience here is largely positive with very few negative things to pick. The work/life balance is not great. The maximum holidays one can take at a stretch is 2 weeks. Totally understand the reason behind it. But for someone like he who travel more than 5000 miles to go home once in a while its not the best situation

    Advice to Management

The experience and learning from working at Laing O'Rourke is exceptional and rapid making the skilled staff hot property in the labour market; especially in Digital Engineering / BIM. So hold on to your amazing staff!!

I have been working at Laing O'Rourke full-time

    Pros

Innovative family run company striving to be the best in the industry, full of inspirational and friendly people from all walks of life. I'm lucky enough to work on Crossrail, the biggest infrastructure project in Europe, which is a challenging complex environment but one which i have been able to learn alot very quickly; and there are so many other projects in the pipeline of similar or even bigger size which is hugely encouraging to see. All these factors have convinced me that i will be at LOR for a longtime to come.

    Cons

I think some people work very unsociable hours which can take its toll, especially if they commute as well, i think maybe productivity could be worked on at a company level so people work shorter but more productive hours; especially the poor site engineers!

    Advice to Management

I think some of the biggest challenges for the company is the conflict between senior management, who were taught very different methods and ideas with completely different technology and software whilst the new generation is coming through being trained in a fast-evolving industry. The challenge is for senior management to embrace these new ideas and learn themselves instead of converting the new generation to the same old methods

A good fair company who took health and safety seriously and kept us all up to date. Management were fair. Generally a good company to work for and would still be there if was well enough to work after having cancer.

    Cons

    Nothing specific comes to mind.

    Advice to Management

Look after your employees and they will reward you and your company with hard work and loyalty.

    Pros

Good salary . Good potential for training.......if you're lucky.

    Cons

Long hours. No bonus. You need to kiss the right backside to go anywhere .

    Advice to Management

An annual bonus would be nice. Listen to your staff more, don't cherry pick the people you know are going to give you the answers you want to hear.

    Pros

They are some genuine, lovely people working for this business especially outside the head office. Pay and package is good and they have a great Christmas party!

    Cons

This company is run by a very small group of people afraid to let anyone have responsibility for decisions or budgets, a big negative to working for a family run business. You have to be very senior before you have any serious responsibility and considered weak of you ask for help. I lost count of the times I generally needed support but was told to come to a meeting with "solutions" not "problems". I personally do not like the management style encouraged by senior leadership, you can expect many people above a certain level to never return your calls or emails and this is generally accepted. People are put under a lot of pressure to show commitment, drive and work stupid hours if they are to get ahead in the business. If you are young, happy to work more than live, move at a moments notice, and join the "boys club" this place is for you!

    Advice to Management

Float on the stock market....that is the only way this company will ever change!

    Pros

Good pay the only good thing

    Cons

Lack of health and safety (big times),people forced to work long hours with 1 break. They don't care about nobody. Some people had to travel 3 hours to work each way and then expected to do 11 hr shift. plenty of accidents on site and no measure taken. They have good connection as nobody pick on them.Any other company and site will be close long time ago.If they can do this on big sites where public attention is on them can't imagine what is happening on smaller ones. They care only about money

    Advice to Management

To think at people before money, and stop being bullies just because they can.Business can be done in many ways without forgetting about being human

    Pros

Great people and culture. Awesome xmas parties.

Expectations of very long hours. When projects end, unless there is another project you may not have another position.

    Advice to Management

Fatigue management is a big factor.

    Pros

    Decent Pay for the position

    Cons

Managers want suggestions but never take anything on board. Management do not listen Higher up management is all very incestuous Work colleagues are no help No acknowledgement for good staff Company values are a bunch of lies

    Advice to Management

For starters you do not need 1. Service desk team leader 2. Customer services manager Remove one of these potions Make up your mind on what you want the position to be, before you advertise for it.
