I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, time off, work\life balance varies by department. Lots to learn with the ability to transfer between different departments. Very easy to get comfortable and stay for long time. Lots of folks there 10-20-30+ years.

    Cons

Lower salary (public sector), slow to adapt to new technology, change is very slow. No real career path for many positions.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, good benifits. The county is financially stable. There are no worries about being laid off. Most coworkers are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

This used to be a great place to work. For the past eight years morale has been in a constant downward spiral. Upper management micro -manages everything. Supervisors aren't allowed to supervise. Line personel are constantly worried about being suspended or fired for doing their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A change at the top is needed. Let your supervisors and line personnel do their jobs without fear of reprisal. That would go a long way towards creating a culture of team work. If nothing changes the feelings of distrust towards management will only get worse.

I worked at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Large health department with financial stability. Good equipment, safe buildings/environment, free professional development trainings (IF your supervisor allows you to attend), lots of resources from various county departments

    Cons

Low morale in the health department. Lack of employee appreciation. While they may at times ask for employee input via a survey, it doesn't seem like they actually listen or respect what they hear.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I've worked for Lake County for 6 years. Overall, it's a good place to work. Management is very competent and expectations, at least in my department, are well defined. The budget is under control, so I don't fear about being laid off. Co-workers have been great. Excellent benefits and flexible work arrangements. Work life balance is the best I've ever dealt with.

    Cons

Like any government agency, there's some politics to deal with. Sometimes bureaucracy impedes progress. Yet, for a government agency things still run pretty smoothly. Pay could be a bit higher, but is competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing, but look for ways to reward those who go above and beyond.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois)

    Pros

Satisfying work, clinical skills put to good use, team-approach and camaraderie among co-workers, challenging assignments, good benefits package, flexible hours, good working conditions, professional learning opportunities.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility due to state budget cuts and constraints and more stringent educational requirements for clinical positions for new hires. High burn-out rate for front line clinicians due to exceptional work load and output expectations given limited resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to offer professional opportunities for learning and networking with other community resources and agencies so that employees have additional flexibility and opportunity for advancement in their chosen careers.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois)

    Pros

Steady employment and excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision and a pension plan (for vested employees after 7 years) and traditional retirement plan

    Cons

Like most government organizations, there is a certain amount of bureaucracy/ stagnation. By and large, though, this is a good employer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been impressed with the level of communication during a challenging budget year. Thank you for preserving people's jobs whenever possible.
