    Great Organization

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWorking for a good cause with good people to work with

ConsLow pay, management is not always in touch with staff needs

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate the hard work of staff members. Everyone is replaceable but the hard work we have contributed over the years is not.

Great organization bogged down by old school, close-minded leadership.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsExcellent mission. You can feel like you are actually making a difference in people's lives. Great health and retirement benefits, especially for a nonprofit. The NY office is spacious and has beautiful views.

ConsVery disorganized. Most people in senior positions seem like they are just riding their jobs out for a few more years until they retire and they don't care about making the organization any better or more efficient. There are a lot of "B Team" players that stick around. Any one who is any good ends up getting frustrated and leaves. It takes forever to get anything done because people are always out of the office and even minor decisions need sign-off from nearly everyone in the department. Lots of micro-managing.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo more to keep your star employees and get rid of the bad ones. Empower employees to actually do their jobs effectively instead of meddling and micromanaging every tiny thing. Understand that your top priority is the people that the organization serves, not office politics.

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Amazing work. Good old boys club environment.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsA very exciting place to work, where you see real change happening before your eyes. Decent benefits, some very passionate, smart coworkers. Great place for a "yes man."

ConsStagnant, close-minded leadership. A lot of petty politics, smack-talking and power struggles. Terrible pay until you get into upper level positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementTime to retire or move on. So much advice is given to HR, but none of it was ever seriously considered. Diversity is one of your greatest weaknesses.

Very rewarding, but as with any nonprofit, some speed bumps along the way.

Community Education & Public Affairs (Former Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsIf you are passionate about GLBT equality and issues and are willing to work with little supervision, it is an excellent atmosphere.

ConsBecause their offices are spread out across the country, weekly staff meetings (read: conference calls) are required. Information is repeated and time is wasted.

Advice to Senior ManagementA better process needs to be in place for communication. There are a lot of inefficiencies that, if remedied, would lead to greater efficacy.

Corrupt, Stagnant, Entrenched & Lazy Leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsNoble mission and well-intentioned people in the lower ranks.

ConsFailure to follow through on the broader mission at the highest levels of the organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's way past time for you to retire or move on. The desperation with which you cling to power that few consider you fully qualified for or worthy of will be long-remembered to the detriment of your reputation. Cut your losses. Let a new generation come in.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
