I have been working at Lankenau Institute for Medical Research full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great location, easy access to public transportation. Free parking onsite. Easy access to healthcare if you choose to use Main Line Health affiliated phycians.

    Cons

Very disappointing work environment. While some of the faculty and most of the staff work very hard it is difficult to get any support from the administration. A good percentage of the faculty have had falling outs with each other so scientific collaboration is minimal. This behavior is not surprising since the executive leader has had very public melt-downs which fosters this type of behavior through the system. The staff has brought issues regarding poor morale to the attention of administration but none of the leaders or directors want to acknowledge the problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is time for you to realize that you and your plans for the institute are the problem, not the employees. A change in leadership is needed.

    Pros

Great location on the Main Line. Free parking for employees. The staff and faculty work hard despite the conditions.

    Cons

More employees were just laid-off. Coming to work is depressing.
There is no scientific diversity, creativity is squelched. This institute has had financial difficulties for years and the management team has not been able to turn it around. They are setting people up for failure by telling the faculty not to write grants. They are trying to run the place like a pharma company but it is way too small to be successful under that strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leaders need to respect employees and realize their leadership skills are the true problem. If your employees tell you something is wrong ask why.

I have been working at Lankenau Institute for Medical Research

    Pros

LIMR has very intelligent faculty with a lot of funding. They offer free parking to all employees. They are located on the Main Line but are just a block from Philadelphia. This allows you to avoid city wage tax. They are centrally located and are served both by the SEPTA bus system and train system.

    Cons

LIMR has very intelligent faculty with a lot of funding. However they treat their staff like they could replace them in a second. All of the work is carried out by the staff and very few faculty would be able to conduct their own experiments. They need to realize this and treat the employees more respectfully. The benefits are also very costly for the quality of the plans. If you are unable to use their doctors or hospitals expect to pay high costs. They also do not offer sick time. If you are sick, you must take vacation time. As an African-American I am disappointed they do not recgonize Martin Luther King Day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more visible and attend events along with the staff. Work with the faculty to treat staff in a more respectful manner.
