I have been working at Latham & Watkins

    Pros

Great pay, people probably better than most law firms.

    Cons

Long unpredictable hours, but that's no different from any other big law firm.

I worked at Latham & Watkins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Look, these are smart folks. It's a hell of franchise, a fairly well run place, and it's true that the culture is better than other places. Compensation was fair and my bonuses were generally above market. That said, I have to say that I came away with more cons than pros and my experience just left a bad taste in my mouth overall

    Cons

where do I start? not enough career opportunities, backstabbing culture, cliquey culture that is based on which group you end up practicing with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm not really in a position to give them any advice. If you aren't in the club, you're on the outside looking in. And from the outside, management looks to be doing a pretty good job. I just wish that that didn't mean killing people's careers. There were some of us who clearly made the wrong decision starting our careers off at Latham, but I'm not bitter; eventually you reap, what you sow.

    Pros

Best big firm to work at in terms of experience, quality of work, and fun people.

    Cons

Very much a what have you done for me lately place. If your practice area dries up, even temporarily, you should have a plan B. Partners don't share credit with each other, unlike other places.

    Pros

Great growth opportunities. Fun Staff to work with. Located all over the world! Friday morning breakfast as well as staff lunches.

    Cons

Tough attorneys can be quite rude at times. Lots of pressure on most things. The work hours can be pretty long on some days.

    Pros

    Extremely laid-back atmosphere

    Strong camaraderie between employees
Kick off your shoes at the end of the day and walk barefoot throughout the office
Everyone is approachable from the lowest on the totem pole to Heaven

    Cons

Big lay-off significantly changed employee perception about the firm
    Virtually no room for advancement
"Lifer" employees only leave when they die

    Pros

great law firm; great name and can go elsewhere with it to smaller places; good people and no screamers, just very nice people

    Cons

unreasonable staffing numbers for some assistants because the headcount isn't what it once was; we need about 15 extra people in my office to get everything done in the time they want it

I worked at Latham & Watkins full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The best reason to work here is everyone is a team player. It was rare to see an attorney upset or out of control like in other firms. They provide a lot of training to their new employees and ensure that they have what they need.

    Cons

I really can't think of anything I did not like about this firm. Maybe not enough career opportunities...maybe proof that everyone really likes working there?
