    Pros

The lab is very much like working in academia, but without classes.
Really laid back, despite its prestige.
Great opportunities for growth and skill development.
You get out of it exactly what you put in.
    Helpful annual reviews and recognitions.
    Great benefits.

    Cons

The union can limit pay rate.
Projects are funded annually so you kinda have to find yourself a project every year, or you might not be fully covered--not a problem if you are a good employee.
    Lacks culture

    Pros

You get the chance to work with highly intelligent, engaging coworkers and do work that is really aimed at helping society. Great benefits and freedom to pursue new ideas.

    Cons

Funding uncertainty may be an issue, given the current environment in Washington. As you might expect, this means that you won't find perks offered by private technical companies in the Bay Area (e.g. catered meals, free transportation) here.

    Advice to Management

Different projects and teams within the lab can be a bit too compartmentalized. Work on making sure everyone knows what out there at LBL, and even in other DOE labs.

    Pros

As an academic environment, there are many different types of jobs and labs at LBNL, the quality of your experience will depend on who you are working with directly. Management and oversight is usually excellent. Worker safety is at the height of LBNL's interests,

    Cons

Sometime bureaucracy gets in the way, but for the most part LBNL is run very well. Tedious purchasing and travel reimbursement systems have improved over the last few years.

    Advice to Management

LBNL and academic research in the US in general is failing to create opportunities for young scientists that pay a comfortable salary. More mid-level positions need to be created so that postdocs can move up from their meagre position. The model in Europe is significantly better where PIs have sub PIs who run small groups under the umbrella of the head PI.

    Pros

highly collaborative workforce who has excellent scientific and technical expertise. Engaging community and beautiful location. Freedom to work on innovative projects and ideas.

    Cons

Difficult to get to by car unless you have a parking pass. Limited opportunities to advance or get recognition for work. Some internal politics at the managerial level can limit work.

    Advice to Management

LBNL is the place to do basic science research, but also needs to be forward thinking in terms of innovation, commercializing new technologies, and recruiting and retaining employees.

My research was cutting-edge and the post-docs were nice.

    Pros

    Good people
    Good Pay
The work is extremely engaging and interesting.
    A lot of employee benefits
Berkeley is a fun place to live and work.

    Cons

Sometimes the working hours get really long, just because the work is very demanding.
    Budget issues are prevalent

    Advice to Management

You should offer undergraduates more opportunities in research, and actively provide training sessions. Keep doing what you are doing though, you guys are awesome.

    Pros

Great people and working environment. I was fully included in all aspects of the research and never felt that I was less valued than those with higher degrees. Exciting and interesting research. Flexible scheduling. Training provided on-site.

    Cons

Higher level positions require advanced degrees, especially PhDs. Since certain equipment and lab space is shared between groups, use of those devices/areas must be scheduled out in advance.
